Mickael Bourg

Wines from Domaine Mickaël Bourg: buy at the best price

In Cornas, on the steep granite hillsides of the northern Rhône Valley, Domaine Mickaël Bourg embodies the return to a traditional Syrah — restrained, finely crafted, and deeply rooted in its terroir. The first generation of winegrowers from a family of Cornas stonemasons, Mickaël Bourg, known as Mika, has been producing his own cuvées since 2006 on a confidential estate of approximately 2 hectares across the Cornas and Saint-Péray appellations. Often compared to Thierry Allemand, he crafts straight, refined, and elegant wines that rank among the finest contemporary expressions of the appellation, in the pure tradition of the great Cornas artisans.

History of Domaine Mickaël Bourg

Mickaël Bourg was born in Cornas, where his father worked as a stonemason. As a teenager, he already roamed the village's steep hillsides, smoked his first cigarettes in the ruins of the old vine huts and gazed at the town from above. Cornas is in his blood. Yet he began his working life as a car mechanic, before turning definitively towards wine. He served his apprenticeship under Matthieu Barret, one of the appellation's iconic figures at Domaine du Coulet, who passed on to him the rigour, the biodynamic philosophy and the passion for the craft.

With the help of Matthieu Barret, Mickaël Bourg produced his first vintage in 2006 from a handful of leased plots. From January 2012, he devoted himself entirely to his estate and gradually built up his vineyard by purchasing or planting new plots. Today, he owns approximately 1.5 hectares in Cornas and 0.5 hectares in Saint-Péray, which he works alone, with his wife and two children. His reputation grew quickly: Théo Allemand, son of the legendary Thierry Allemand, even came to work alongside him — a sign that Mika now belongs to the lineage of great Cornas artisans. The first generation of winemakers in his family, he embodies the renewal of a tradition in which he has entirely reinvented himself.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Mickaël Bourg

The vineyard of Domaine Mickaël Bourg extends over approximately 2 hectares, divided between the Cornas appellation (1.5 ha) and the Saint-Péray appellation (0.5 ha), in the heart of the northern Rhône Valley. In Cornas, Mika cultivates some of the appellation's most prestigious lieux-dits: Les Chaillots, Les Mazards and Saint-Pierre, on vertiginously steep hillsides where the soils are essentially composed of granite and granitic sand. This geological signature imparts a characteristic saline minerality and freshness to the Syrah, far removed from the excesses sometimes encountered in the appellation. In Saint-Péray, the main plots are located on the lieux-dits Combe, Biousse and Les Putiers, planted exclusively with Marsanne on granitic terraces.

Around 60% of the vines were planted in the 1950s, complemented by more recent plantings carried out in 2004 and 2005. Vineyard management is rigorously organic (non-certified), inspired by biodynamic principles, with no chemical inputs or pesticides whatsoever. All work is done by hand: the steepness of the slopes rules out the use of any mechanical equipment, and even a horse cannot pull a plough on certain terraces. To harvest the most extreme rows, Mickaël Bourg sometimes ties himself to a cable fixed at the top of the slope, a testament to the heroic nature of viticulture in Cornas.

Winemaking at Domaine Mickaël Bourg

In the cellar, Mickaël Bourg applies resolutely traditional winemaking techniques, going against the fruity and powerful style sometimes encountered today in Cornas. Mika instead seeks an older style of Syrah, defined by restraint, elegance and sapidity. Harvesting is entirely manual, and the Syrah is vinified entirely as whole clusters. Fermentations proceed spontaneously, using only indigenous yeasts, with no oenological inputs whatsoever, in a spirit of absolute transparency with regard to terroir.

The wines are aged in demi-muids and one- or two-year-old barrels (sometimes in foudres), for approximately 18 months for the Cornas wines. No new oak is used on the reds, so as never to mask the purity of the fruit and the granitic signature of the terroir. The Marsanne from Saint-Péray benefits from longer ageing in demi-muids, sometimes in new oak for younger vintages to acquire structure and aromatic richness. No fining, no filtration, minimal sulphur dosage: the result is a recognisable signature defined by precision, purity and ageing potential, often fifteen to twenty years for the Cornas wines.

The Cuvées of Domaine Mickaël Bourg

Cornas: the estate's signature and flagship cuvée, crafted from 100% Syrah sourced from the prestigious lieux-dits Saint-Pierre, Les Mazards and Les Chaillots. Vinified as whole clusters with only indigenous yeasts and no inputs, it is aged for 18 months in used 600-litre demi-muids, then bottled without fining or filtration. An intense ink-dark robe with violet highlights, a nose of blackberry, black cherry, pepper, chocolate and woodland notes, a dense palate with deep chew, and a long, saline finish. A great Cornas Syrah, built for fifteen to twenty years of ageing.

Cornas Les P'tits Bouts: a blend of younger parcels or row-end fruit not incorporated into the main cuvée, vinified with the same extreme care. It captivates with its freshness, notes of violet, pepper and blood orange, its fine tannic backbone and refined chew. More approachable in its youth than the single-parcel Saint-Pierre / Les Mazards cuvée, it nonetheless remains capable of beautiful development with a few years in the cellar.

Saint-Péray: the estate's only white wine, crafted from 100% Marsanne sourced from old vines planted on the steep granitic terraces of Combe, Biousse and Les Putiers. Depending on the vintage, ageing takes place in new or used demi-muids. A brilliant golden robe, a complex and charming nose of poached pear, candied lemon, apricot, white flowers and the honeyed notes typical of fine Marsanne. The palate, with its waxy texture, is distinguished by a rare mineral tension, a vibrant salinity and a refined length, far from any heaviness.

La Démarrante: a freer Vin de France cuvée, crafted from young vines or grapes outside the AOC, vinified in the same natural spirit as the estate's other wines. A fluid and thirst-quenching wine, marked by notes of violet, vegetal touches and a menthol finish. A gourmand cuvée to drink young, offering a fine entry point into Mickaël Bourg's Cornas universe.
