Domaine Luigi Pira is a family reference for Barolo, nestled in Serralunga d'Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, in Piedmont. Across 12 hectares planted predominantly with Nebbiolo, the Pira family produces classic, structured Barolos of great longevity, including three of Serralunga's most prestigious single vineyards: Vignarionda, Marenca and Margheria. The range is completed by appealing Piedmontese wines made from indigenous varieties — Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba. Each cuvée is a faithful reflection of the limestone terroir of Serralunga and of a savoir-faire passed down over five generations.
The Pira family's history has been tied to the hills of Serralunga d'Alba since the late nineteenth century. It was in the 1950s that Luigi Pira, supported by his wife Rosa, resolutely steered the estate toward viticulture, with the ambition of showcasing the great terroir of Serralunga. For decades, the estate sold its grapes and wine in bulk to the major houses of the Albese, who were eager for the precious Nebbiolo from these hillsides.
The turning point came in the early 1990s with the arrival of Luigi's sons, Gianpaolo, Romolo and Claudio. The cellar was renovated, new equipment was installed and quality became the absolute priority. The first house-bottled Barolo was released in 1993, followed by the acquisition of the three great crus that today make the estate's reputation. Gianpaolo now runs the business with his brothers and the help of his own family — his wife Tiziana and his daughters Annalisa and Elena — for a confidential production of approximately 50,000 to 55,000 bottles per year.
The vineyard extends over 12 hectares, almost entirely located in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba, at the heart of the Barolo DOCG zone. Approximately 6 hectares of Nebbiolo are dedicated to Barolo, including three prestigious crus — Vignarionda, Marenca and Margheria — while the remaining vines are spread across the western slope, facing the village of Monforte. The estate also cultivates Barbera over 2 hectares, Dolcetto over 2.5 hectares and Langhe Nebbiolo over 1.5 hectares, with vines ranging from 20 to 50 years of age.
The terroir of Serralunga, marked by the Lequio Formations and very compact grey-brown marls rich in limestone, produces deep, powerful, tannic wines with an exceptional capacity for aging. Perched at an altitude of 414 meters, this small village is renowned for producing a straight, classic and intense Barolo. Vine cultivation here is conducted with respect, through reasoned farming and without synthetic chemical products, in a constant pursuit of the purest expression of the grape.
The estate's philosophy unites tradition and precision. Fermentations take place at controlled temperature in mechanized rotary tanks, with macerations of eighteen to twenty days that gently extract color, aromas and tannins from the Nebbiolo. Each cru is vinified separately in order to reveal the personality of its plot.
Aging favors the traditions of the Langhe, with a long maturation in large 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak foudres, complemented depending on the cuvée by some French oak barriques and tonneaux of 225 and 500 liters. The use of wood always remains measured and purposeful, conceived never to distort what the terroir offers. The result is Barolos with a classic and austere style in their youth, combining structure, minerality and elegance, made to last for decades.
Barolo Serralunga: a true entry point into the house style, this blended Barolo brings together Nebbiolos from several plots in Serralunga, including La Rivetta and the lower slopes of the Marenca and Margheria crus. Aged approximately 24 months in large Slavonian oak foudres, it reveals a garnet color, a complex nose of dried rose, tobacco and leather, and a palate that is both structured and approachable. A great classic, readier to drink than the single-cru wines.
Barolo Vigna Margheria: from the historic cru that has accompanied the family since time immemorial, this Barolo stands out for its pronounced mineral character. Elegant and thoroughbred, it unfolds floral and spicy aromas on a firm structure and beautiful depth, promising a long aging potential.
Barolo Vigna Marenca: born from a plot of approximately two hectares nestled in a pronounced and particularly steep hollow, this cru produces a dense, powerful and full-bodied Barolo. Concentrated and built for aging, it embodies the full force of Serralunga Nebbiolo.
Barolo Vignarionda: the jewel of the estate, it comes from the most prestigious cru in Serralunga, considered one of the greatest terroirs in Barolo. One hundred percent Nebbiolo, of exceptional depth and elegance, it reveals a complex bouquet of forest fruits, sweet tobacco and balsamic notes, with extraordinary persistence and an aging potential of ten to twenty years and beyond.
Langhe Nebbiolo: grown on a plot planted in 1999 in Serralunga, this more approachable Nebbiolo offers a fine introduction to the king grape of the Langhe. Fruity, supple and fragrant, aged in Slavonian oak foudres and in barrique, it is enjoyed with pleasure from youth.
Barbera d'Alba: an emblematic grape variety of Piedmont, Barbera here yields an indulgent and fruity wine, driven by natural freshness and beautiful substance. Aged in Slavonian oak foudres and French oak barrique, it marries tension and roundness with great charm.
Dolcetto d'Alba: the quintessential everyday wine of the Langhe, this intense and richly colored Dolcetto captivates with its crunchy fruitiness. Aged in tank to preserve its freshness, it is enjoyed young, on notes of dark fruits and a savory finish.
