The history of Domaine du Clos Rougeot (Bastien Leclerc)

Born in 1990, Bastien Leclerc studied viticulture and enology at the winegrowing school in Avize, a training ground for Champagne growers that has nurtured many of the talents behind the reputation of today’s grower champagnes. In 2015, he took the plunge and acquired his first plots in Congy, a small village in the southern Marne that lies beyond the Côte des Blancs. Rather than rushing, he took time to understand and restore his vines and develop a coherent approach before releasing his first vintage.

His first harvest vinified under his own name was in 2021, a difficult year in Champagne during which he kept only the best fruit from his plot. Domaine du Clos Rougeot was officially established in 2023, with Bastien Leclerc as its manager. Just a few years after his debut, the estate’s wines have already appeared on the lists of some of Europe’s most prestigious restaurants, a testament to the interest its cuvées have sparked among sommeliers.

The terroirs and vineyards of Domaine du Clos Rougeot (Bastien Leclerc)

The Clos Rougeot vineyard is in Congy, in the heart of the Coteaux du Petit Morin, an area long overshadowed by neighboring grands crus but now recognized for the quality of its Chardonnay. Its soils combine clay, flint, and chalk, giving the wines both generous texture and a distinctive saline tension. Les Cornabeaux, the site that produced the estate’s first cuvée, is among the village’s most highly regarded plots.

At the heart of the estate are old Chardonnay vines planted in 1969. Now over 50 years old, these vines naturally produce small yields and concentrated grapes with great aromatic depth. Bastien Leclerc tends them without insecticides or herbicides, favoring manual work and careful observation of the vines to preserve soil life and the truest expression of the terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine du Clos Rougeot (Bastien Leclerc)

Winemaking at Clos Rougeot begins with rigorous selection: only the finest grapes from the plot are chosen for the cuvée. The still wines are then vinified and aged in oak barrels from a prestigious estate, a choice that brings gentle oxygenation, texture, and appealing complexity without obscuring the purity of the Chardonnay.

After secondary fermentation, the bottles age for an extended period on the lees before disgorgement, as with the 2021 vintage, disgorged in December 2024. This time in the cellar allows the bubbles to become finer and the wine to gain depth, yielding a precise, rich champagne made for the table rather than the aperitif.

The cuvées of Domaine du Clos Rougeot (Bastien Leclerc)

Les Cornabeaux (vintage Blanc de Blancs): the estate’s first and, to date, only identified cuvée, Les Cornabeaux is pure Chardonnay from old vines planted in 1969 on the namesake site in Congy. The 2021 vintage, aged in oak barrel and then extensively on the lees in bottle before disgorgement in December 2024, reveals a terroir-driven champagne that is both taut and rich, shaped by the salinity of the Coteaux du Petit Morin and the concentration of its old vines. Produced in very small quantities.
