The history of Château Maucaillou dates back to 1875, when J. Petit-Laroche, a wine merchant, decided to have a château built as a wedding gift for his wife. This bold château blends the architectural styles of the Renaissance with 17th-century influences, giving rise to a unique building that is symbolic of the architectural eclecticism of the Médoc at the end of the 19th century.
The name "Maucaillou" translates as "bad stones", referring to the gravelly soils which, in the Middle Ages, were poorly suited to cereal farming. However, these gravel ridges, composed of shining pebbles, proved to be an ideal terroir for the vine, offering Château Maucaillou a unique potential for the production of great wines. In 1929, the Dourthe family, renowned wine merchants, acquired the estate. This family, passionate about wine, has continually developed the property and modernised its facilities. The vineyard has thus gradually expanded to cover nearly 90 hectares today.
Château Maucaillou was also one of the first Crus Bourgeois to join the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, a mark of quality and international recognition. The motto "Grand Cru Classé, ne puis; Cru Bourgeois, ne daigne; Château Maucaillou, suis" aptly sums up the strong identity of this property which, without belonging to the 1855 classification, nor to the Crus Bourgeois since 2003, stands out for the quality of its wines.
The terroirs of Château Maucaillou consist primarily of Güntz Garonne gravels, a type of soil that reflects sunlight onto the grape clusters, thus promoting optimal ripening of the grapes. This gravelly soil, once considered unsuitable for cultivation, is today recognised as an ideal soil for high-quality grape varieties. The estate's vines cover 72 hectares under the AOC Moulis-en-Médoc and 18 hectares under the AOC Haut-Médoc, prestigious appellations of the region.
The grape variety composition of Château Maucaillou is perfectly balanced to create wines of character and ageing potential. It consists of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, providing structure and ageing potential, 41% Merlot, adding roundness and softness, and 7% Petit Verdot, a variety that lends the wine specific aromas and an intense colour. The meticulous care given to the vines results in harvests carried out both by hand and by machine, depending on each plot, to guarantee the optimal quality of the grapes.
Winemaking at Château Maucaillou is a highly precise process, led by Pascal Dourthe and his team, who strive to bring out the best of each vintage. As early as 1982, Philippe Dourthe introduced a unique method: the first days of fermentation are carried out at low temperature, to preserve and intensify the fruity aromas of the grapes. The temperature is then gradually raised to extract the fine tannins and colour from the grape skins, ensuring harmonious and well-balanced wines.
After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation is initiated to soften the flavours and stabilise the wine. The wines then age in French oak barrels, renewed each year at a rate of 40 to 60% depending on the characteristics of the vintage. This oak ageing process imparts subtle woody aromas and a tannic structure suited to a long ageing potential. The Château has two ageing cellars where the wines spend their first and second year of ageing respectively.
The wines of Château Maucaillou are recognised for their elegance and aromatic richness, regularly awarded at competitions and professional tastings. The estate's annual production is divided into three main cuvées:
Château Maucaillou
Château Maucaillou, the estate's flagship wine, is a benchmark of the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation. It is characterised by a deep ruby colour, aromas of ripe red fruits and a subtle aromatic complexity. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, generous and well-balanced, with a tannic elegance that delivers great length. It is aged in French oak barrels and has a remarkable ageing potential, capable of being kept for decades. This wine is particularly appreciated for its finesse and its ability to gain in complexity as it ages.
Le N°2 de Maucaillou
Le N°2 de Maucaillou is the estate's second wine, made from the same terroirs and vines as Château Maucaillou. Although it is less complex than the fine wine, it is recognised for its charming character, generous fruitiness and roundness on the palate. This wine is designed to be enjoyed younger, yet retains a fine tannic structure that allows it to age well. Le N°2 de Maucaillou is often described as a supple and pleasant wine, perfect for more relaxed tastings while still offering a genuine signature of quality.
Haut-Médoc de Maucaillou
Made from vines located outside of Moulis, the Haut-Médoc de Maucaillou is a wine crafted to the same exacting standards as the Fine Wine. This wine is distinguished by its intense aromas of dark fruits and a fine tannic structure. On the palate, it offers a balanced richness and a silky taste, faithful to the spirit of the estate. This passion cuvée is produced in limited quantities and enjoys great success among lovers of elegant and refined wines.
Other wines from the estate
In addition to the red wines, Château Maucaillou also produces a white wine cuvée, B par Maucaillou, an AOC Bordeaux Blanc made primarily from Sauvignon Blanc. The estate also stands out with its sparkling wine, Tentation par Maucaillou, one of the rare Crémants de Bordeaux from the left bank, perfect for celebrations and festive occasions.
