Operated by the Despagne family, 35 km east of Bordeaux (right bank of the Dordogne), Château Grand Corbin Despagne is a Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion. It is surrounded by the châteaux Corbin Michotte, Croque Michotte, Corbin and Haut Corbin. Bordering Pomerol, the vineyard spans 26.5 hectares on sandy soils containing iron-rich deposits over clay. With an average vine age of 38 years, the estate has been farmed using Organic Agriculture since 2013, with a planting density of 6,000 to 8,000 vines per hectare. The grape varieties are as follows: Merlot (75%), Cabernet Franc (24%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).

Domaine Grand Corbin Despagne produces three red wines: its first wine, “le Fine Wine de Grand Corbin Despagne”; its second wine, “Petit Corbin Despagne”; and a third called “Château Laporte.” The Fine Wine is powerful and full-bodied, with notes of plum, blackberry and licorice over a fairly dense palate. It is best enjoyed after 6 to 15 years but can age even longer in great vintages. The quality of this wine has improved remarkably since the late 1990s. “Petit Corbin Despagne” (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc), made from vines 10 to 20 years old, offers immediate pleasure through its fruit and supple tannins and is especially popular with restaurateurs. It is best enjoyed after 3 to 7 years. Finally, Château Laporte is made from the estate’s youngest vines. The finest vintages are 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2005, 2001, 2000 and 1998. Lovers of bold, powerful wines will want to pick up a few bottles: the value for money is excellent, with no speculative pricing even for the very good vintages—something uncommon in Bordeaux.
