Château Grand Corbin Despagne wines: buy at the best price

Operated by the Despagne family 35 km east of Bordeaux (right bank of the Dordogne), Château Grand Corbin Despagne is a Grand Cru Classé of St-Emilion. It is surrounded by the châteaux Corbin Michotte, Croque Michotte, Corbin and Haut Corbin. Bordering Pomerol, the vines, covering an area of 26.5 ha, thrive on sandy soils containing iron deposits over clay. With an average age of 38 years, the vineyard has been managed using Organic Farming since 2013, with a density of 6,000 to 8,000 vines per hectare. The grape varieties are as follows: Merlot (75%), Cabernet Franc (24%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).

The Domaine Grand Corbin Despagne produces 3 cuvées of red wines: The first wine "the Fine Wine of Grand Corbin Despagne", the second wine "Petit Corbin Despagne" and a last one named "Château Laporte". The Fine Wine is powerful and full-bodied, with notes of plum, blackberry and liquorice on a fairly dense palate. It can be enjoyed after 6 to 15 years but can age even longer in great vintages. The quality of this wine has remarkably improved since the late 1990s. The "Petit Corbin Despagne" (70% merlot, 30% cabernet franc), vinified from 10 to 20-year-old vines, offers immediate pleasure through its fruitiness and supple tannins, and is very popular with restaurateurs. It should be consumed within 3 to 7 years. Finally, Château Laporte is made from the youngest vines of the estate. The greatest vintages are as follows: 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2005, 2001, 2000 and 1998. Lovers of full-bodied and powerful wines will want to acquire a few bottles since the quality-to-price ratio is excellent and not at all speculative, even for the very best vintages, which is uncommon in Bordeaux.
