Pioneer in organic viticulture in Sauternes - Premier Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes
Château Guiraud is one of the most iconic estates in the Sauternes appellation, recognized throughout the world for its sweet wines of remarkable finesse and balance. Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate distinguishes itself through its pursuit of excellence, its pioneering approach to organic viticulture, and its deep commitment to biodiversity. With wines that combine freshness, elegance and aromatic complexity, Château Guiraud offers a unique experience, a true reflection of its exceptional terroir and singular history.
The history of Château Guiraud dates back to 1766, when Pierre Guiraud, a Protestant Bordeaux merchant, acquired the property then known as "Maison Noble du Bayle". The estate, located in Sauternes, to the southeast of Bordeaux, developed under the impetus of the Guiraud family and quickly gained renown. In 1855, it was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé during the famous imperial classification of the wines of Sauternes and Barsac.
Throughout its history, Château Guiraud has distinguished itself through its spirit of independence and innovation. Its famous black and gold label, adopted as early as the first half of the 19th century, has become an iconic visual signature. In 1981, after a period of decline during the war, the Narby family, of Egyptian origin, undertook a complete restoration of the estate and brought it back to the forefront of the world wine scene. Under the direction of Xavier Planty, engaged in 1988, Château Guiraud reclaimed its status as a reference in Sauternes.
In 2006, a new era began with the acquisition of the property by a consortium composed of major figures in the wine world, including Robert Peugeot and Olivier Bernard. Their shared vision allowed the estate to continue its path towards excellence, notably with the achievement, in 2011, of the Organic Agriculture certification, a first for a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes.
Today, under the direction of Sandrine Garbay since 2022, former cellar master of Château d'Yquem, Château Guiraud continues to shine through its ecological practices and its wines that are both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.
The terroir of Château Guiraud is an essential component of the exceptional quality of its wines. The estate spans 128 hectares, of which 100 hectares are planted with vines, located on a plateau of sandy and clayey gravels. This distinctive soil, combined with a subsoil rich in deep sands, plays a determining role in the singular identity of the estate's wines.
The vineyard is planted with a majority of Sémillon (65%) and a significant proportion of Sauvignon Blanc (35%), an unusual choice for the Sauternes appellation, where grape varieties are traditionally dominated by Sémillon. This high proportion of Sauvignon Blanc contributes to the freshness and balance of Château Guiraud's wines, lending them a contemporary dimension while respecting the codes of great sweet wines.
The estate, a pioneer in biodiversity as early as 1996, has implemented numerous initiatives to encourage natural life around the vines: hedgerows for wildlife, plantings of varied species, and even beehives to promote pollination. With more than 630 insect species recorded and a permaculture approach applied across the entire vineyard, Château Guiraud is a true living ecosystem.
Winemaking at Château Guiraud is a craftsman's work, drawing on centuries-old expertise and meticulous attention at every stage of the process. Harvesting is exclusively manual, carried out through successive sorting passes in order to select only the grapes affected by noble rot, the famous Botrytis cinerea. This fungus enables a natural concentration of sugars in the grape, while preserving a perfect balance with acidity.
After the harvest, the grapes are vinified with indigenous yeasts, a practice respectful of the terroir that reinforces the singularity of the wines. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, of which a significant proportion (90%) are new, thus ensuring fine aromatic complexity and a rich texture. The wines are then aged on fine lees for 18 to 24 months, with regular racking to guarantee the purity of the aromas.
The estate's organic approach excludes the use of chaptalization, a method that involves adding sugar to the must before fermentation, thereby affirming Château Guiraud's commitment to natural winemaking in keeping with its ecological principles.
Château Guiraud - 1er Grand Cru Classé in 1855
The estate's flagship wine, Château Guiraud 1er Grand Cru Classé, is a benchmark for Sauternes. Crafted from a blend of 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, this great wine stands out for its perfect balance between richness and freshness. The golden robe with amber reflections heralds a remarkable aromatic complexity, with notes of candied fruit, honey, and exotic spices, on a backdrop of white flowers.
On the palate, the wine offers a fine density, supported by a surprising vivacity that counterbalances the natural sweetness of the botrytized grapes. Ageing in new oak barrels imparts subtle hints of vanilla and brioche, without ever dominating the primary fruit aromas. Each vintage of Château Guiraud is a unique expression of its terroir, with exceptional ageing potential.
Petit Guiraud
Petit Guiraud, the estate's second wine, is a more accessible version of the grand vin while retaining the DNA and unique style of Château Guiraud. Crafted from the same grape varieties and following a similar winemaking process, Petit Guiraud stands out for its freshness and elegance. It offers a luminous golden robe and indulgent aromas of fresh fruit, flowers, and honey, with a light vanilla touch from partial ageing in barrels.
Lighter and easier to drink than its elder, Petit Guiraud is the wine for every occasion, perfect for accompanying desserts or simply to savour for pleasure. Certified Organic Agriculture, it reflects the estate's commitment to sustainable and environmentally respectful viticulture.
