One of the stars of the Rhône
Château Grillet, a tiny 3.5-hectare vineyard in the Northern Rhône, is a monopole appellation and today produces an average of 10,000 bottles per year. It is said that Emperor Probus planted the very first vine parcels at Château Grillet in the 3rd century, using plants brought from Dalmatia. Consumed by Empress Joséphine (Napoleon's wife), in 1936, owner Henri Gachet obtained recognition of the Château Grillet appellation d'origine contrôlée, then one of the smallest in France. Château Grillet was resold in 2011 to François Pinault, by the Neyret Gachet family who had owned it since 1827.
Extraordinary means have been implemented to restore this vineyard to the place it deserves. Technical teams have succeeded one another here under the leadership of Frédéric Engerer from Château Latour in Pauillac. A true "amphitheater" facing south, the Château Grillet vineyard benefits from an exceptional microclimate, warm and sunny, protected from north winds. Its name could indeed come from the "grilled" or sun-scorched hillsides. The vines, with an average age of 45 years and planted on sometimes dizzying slopes, located between 150 and 250 meters altitude, are distributed over 87 terraces that surround Château Grillet, called "chaillées," and maintained by dry stone walls. They are worked with winches and pickaxes. Since Roman times, the permanent intervention of human hands for the harmonious development of these terraces has given this exceptional place its identity. The entire estate has been certified in biodynamics since December 2016. Château Grillet produces here a wine that displays, in the best vintages, full maturity, a mineral and saline tension that characterize the great wines of the past. It possesses superb energy, a mid-palate of fine breadth, freshness, and a slender finish. The wines have been at their peak for the past 4/5 years. Château Grillet redefines the standards of Viognier from the Condrieu AOC, because since 2011, Château Grillet has decided to be even more rigorous in its selection of grapes and to exclude grapes deemed not yet having reached the required level for Château Grillet. These grapes are used to produce a simple Côtes du Rhône 100% viognier, named Pontcin. A luxury Côtes du Rhône, so to speak!
