One of the stars of the Rhône
Château Grillet, a tiny 3.5-hectare vineyard in the Northern Rhône, is a monopole appellation producing an average of 10,000 bottles per year today. It is said that Emperor Probus planted the very first vine plots of Château Grillet in the 3rd century, using plants brought from Dalmatia. Consumed by Empress Joséphine (wife of Napoleon), in 1936, owner Henri Gachet obtained recognition of the Château Grillet controlled designation of origin, at the time one of the smallest in France. Château Grillet was sold in 2011 to François Pinault, by the Neyret Gachet family who had owned it since 1827.
Extraordinary measures have been taken to restore this vineyard to the place it deserves. Technical teams have succeeded one another here under the guidance of Frédéric Engerer from Château Latour in Pauillac. A true "amphitheatre" facing south, the Château Grillet vineyard benefits from an exceptional microclimate — warm and sunny, sheltered from the northerly winds. Its name may indeed derive from the "grillés" or sun-scorched hillsides. The vines, with an average age of 45 years and planted on sometimes vertiginous slopes at altitudes ranging from 150 to 250 metres, are spread across 87 terraces surrounding Château Grillet, known as "chaillées", and supported by dry-stone walls. They are worked using winches and pickaxes. Since Roman times, the continuous human intervention in shaping these terraces in harmony has given this exceptional place its identity. The entire estate has been certified in biodynamic farming since December 2016. Château Grillet produces here a wine that, in the finest vintages, displays full maturity, a mineral and saline tension that characterises the great wines of the past. It possesses superb energy, a broad mid-palate, freshness, and a long, linear finish. The wines have been at their peak for the past 4 to 5 years. Château Grillet is redefining the benchmarks of Viognier from the AOC Condrieu, as since 2011, Château Grillet has chosen to be even more stringent in its selection of grapes, setting aside those deemed not yet to have reached the level required for Château Grillet. These grapes are used to produce a simple 100% Viognier Côtes du Rhône, named Pontcin. A luxury Côtes du Rhône in every sense of the word!
