This iconic estate of the Rhône Valley, situated at the foot of the Coteau de Vernon in Condrieu, has existed for three generations and was founded in the 1930s. Recognised by numerous critics, including the Robert Parker guide, under the name "Monsieur Viognier" or the "Pope of Viognier", Georges Vernay contributed to the development of this grape variety and the Condrieu appellation throughout the world. In 1996, his daughter Christine Vernay, assisted by her brother Luc, took over the estate, which spans 16 hectares. In 2010, the Domaine Georges Vernay reached around twenty hectares. In 2014, Christine Vernay became a member of the Académie du Vin de France. She carries on the family tradition and the work undertaken by her father Georges, who passed away in May 2017.

The TOP winemakers of Rhône

The first hectare of viognier vines was planted in 1938 on the family estate that would become the Domaine Georges Vernay in 1953. His father, Francis Vernay, managed the property and cultivated fruit trees rather than vines. Upon his arrival at the estate in the 1940s, Georges Vernay was convinced that growing grapes — and viognier in particular — on such an exceptional terroir as Condrieu, was a key factor in the development of the region. Georges Vernay then decided to purchase several plots, planted others, and opened the region's first tasting cellar. He also took on the presidency of the Condrieu appellation in the 1960s, a position he held for some thirty years.

Among the cuvées of Domaine Georges Vernay, the Coteau de Vernon from the Condrieu appellation, made exclusively from viognier, displays a pale robe and offers a bouquet of beautiful complexity, with stone fruit aromas such as apricot. On the palate, the same fruity notes are found, with a liquorice-tinged finish. This wine can be enjoyed between 2 and 15 years. The Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge cuvée, produced in the southern part of the appellation, is made from 100% syrah. With its deep ruby-purple robe, this wine expresses notes of black fruit, smoke, and spice. On the palate, silkier notes of liquorice and cigar box emerge. This is a wine with excellent ageing potential. The Les Chaillées de l'Enfer cuvée from the Condrieu appellation (100% viognier) offers a fine balance and an aromatic explosion. The palate is mineral with flavours of exotic fruit. The finish leaves a pleasant bitterness. The Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'Empire represents the quintessential fruity wine, with aromas of white peach and a lovely freshness. The Le Pied de Samson cuvée, made exclusively from viognier, is distinguished by a pale gold robe and a nose of stone fruit. Finally, in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, the La Blonde du Seigneur cuvée expresses very floral notes despite the power of this wine. The nose is mineral with notes of black fruit. The palate is aromatic with remarkable tannins that ensure a fine, lingering finish.
