This iconic estate of the Rhône Valley, situated at the foot of the Coteau de Vernon in Condrieu, has existed for three generations and was founded in the 1930s. Recognised by numerous critics, including the Robert Parker guide, under the name "Monsieur Viognier" or the "Pope of Viognier", Georges Vernay contributed to the development of this grape variety and the Condrieu appellation throughout the world. In 1996, his daughter Christine Vernay, assisted by her brother Luc, took over the estate, which spans 16 hectares. In 2010, the Domaine Georges Vernay reached around twenty hectares. In 2014, Christine Vernay became a member of the Académie du Vin de France. She carries on the family tradition and the work undertaken by her father Georges, who passed away in May 2017.

The TOP winemakers of Rhône

The first hectare of Viognier grape variety was planted in 1938 on the family estate that would become Domaine Georges Vernay in 1953. His father Francis Vernay managed the property and cultivated fruit trees rather than vines. Upon arriving at the estate in the 1940s, Georges Vernay was convinced that grape cultivation, particularly Viognier, on such an exceptional terroir as Condrieu, was a key element for the region's development. Georges Vernay then decided to purchase several parcels, planted others, and opened the first tasting cellar in the region. He also served as president of the Condrieu appellation in the 1960s for about thirty years.

Among the cuvées from Domaine Georges Vernay, the Coteau de Vernon in the Condrieu appellation, composed exclusively of Viognier, has a pale robe and offers a bouquet of beautiful complexity with stone fruits such as apricot. On the palate, you find the same fruity notes and a licorice finish. This wine can be enjoyed between 2 and 15 years. The Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge cuvée produced in the south of the appellation is composed of 100% Syrah. With its purple-black ruby robe, this wine expresses notes of black fruits, smoke, and spices. On the palate, you can distinguish silkier notes of licorice and cigar box. This is a wine with excellent aging potential. The Les Chaillées de l'Enfer cuvée in the Condrieu appellation (100% Viognier) offers a beautiful balance and aromatic explosion. The palate is mineral with exotic fruit flavors. The finish leaves a pleasant bitterness. The Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'Empire represents the typical fruity wine with white peach aromas and beautiful freshness. The Le Pied de Samson cuvée, composed exclusively of Viognier, stands out with its pale gold robe and nose of stone fruits. Finally, in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, the La Blonde du Seigneur cuvée expresses very floral notes despite the power of this wine. The nose is mineral with black fruit notes. The palate is aromatic with remarkable tannins that ensure a beautiful length on the finish.
