History of Domaine Georges Vernay

In the 1930s, before the appellation was even established, Francis Vernay planted one hectare of Viognier in the Coteau de Vernon lieu-dit. Those vines are now the oldest in Condrieu. The estate was officially founded in 1937, and its first cuvée bearing the family name appeared in 1940: Coteau de Vernon, since become legendary.

Georges Vernay succeeded his father in the early 1950s, when the appellation was on the verge of disappearing. Rural flight had left the hillsides abandoned, and Condrieu had only eight to ten hectares in production. Visionary and stubborn, convinced that Viognier could work its magic only here, Georges set about reclaiming slopes no one else dared cultivate, clearing them, rebuilding the stone walls and replanting. For many years, he tended half the appellation single-handedly. His work earned him the nickname “Pope of Condrieu” and made him a leader for a whole generation of winegrowers between Condrieu and Ampuis. In 1992, he created the estate’s second cuvée, Les Chaillées de l'Enfer. In 1996, his daughter Christine, then a teacher, decided to take the reins. She completed the restoration of Coteau de Vernon, created Les Terrasses de l'Empire in 1998, then raised the reds to the level of the whites with Maison Rouge, first vinified in 1997, and La Blonde du Seigneur, created in 1998. A member of the Académie du vin de France and the Académie internationale du vin, made a chevalier of the Ordre national du Mérite in 2011 and named Winemaker of the Year by Bettane and Desseauve in 2012, she received three stars from the Revue du vin de France’s Guide Vert in 2020, its highest distinction. Her daughter Emma Amsellem has joined her to prepare for the fourth generation.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Georges Vernay

The vineyard covers twenty-four hectares: ten in Condrieu, six in Côte-Rôtie, two in Saint-Joseph and six in IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, planted with Syrah and Viognier. Seventeen hectares lie on steep hillsides shaped into narrow terraces supported by dry-stone walls. The predominant soil is decomposed granite, known locally as arzelle. Sandy and poor, it forces the vines to root deeply and gives the wines the saline signature that has come to define the estate.

Viognier reigns in Condrieu, led by Coteau de Vernon, the historic heart of both the estate and the appellation. Syrah occupies the Côte-Rôtie hillsides at Tupin and those of Saint-Joseph near Chavanay, where the vines are often more than forty-five years old. The entire estate is certified organic and farmed according to biodynamic principles, with Biodyvin certification. No synthetic chemicals are used; soils are plowed by hand or with a winch on the steepest slopes, and all grapes are harvested by hand. This meticulous work has revitalized the granite terroir and heightened the wines’ mineral tension. All grapes vinified come from the estate’s own vines.

Winemaking at Domaine Georges Vernay

Christine Vernay built her approach on observation rather than formulas: regularly tasting the berries and seeds, examining the grape skins and making harvest decisions parcel by parcel. The quality of the terroirs and the particular climate of this part of the Rhône make it possible to avoid heaviness and reveal the legendary aromatic finesse of Viognier and Syrah.

The whites are gently pressed, then fermented and aged on fine lees in barrels and demi-muids, with very little new oak, for periods that vary by cuvée and vintage. The aim is to preserve Viognier’s energy and savory character rather than add richness. For the reds, aging has become markedly more refined and powdery in texture over successive vintages, yielding delicate, gently infused wines through measured extraction and careful maceration. The resulting style is instantly recognizable: the richness and power remain, but above all the wines now have an energy, approachability and depth they did not possess some fifteen years ago.

The cuvées of Domaine Georges Vernay

Condrieu Coteau de Vernon: the estate’s legendary cuvée and one of the world’s great white wines, made from the appellation’s oldest vines, planted in the 1930s. A wine of great complexity yet exceptional elegance, it offers aromas of yellow fruit, fresh or candied citrus, and tropical fruit, depending on the vintage, accented by pleasing bitter notes. The balance is always impeccable, with abundant freshness, herbal and minty notes, white flowers and beautiful acidity. Noble, taut, focused and precise, with its exuberance perfectly controlled: Condrieu at its finest.

Condrieu Les Chaillées de l'Enfer: created by Georges Vernay in 1992, this cuvée takes its name from the sun-scorched terraces overlooking the Rhône. A captivating wine that blends apricot, pear and white peach with citrus, waxy and floral notes (white flowers, rose, violet), herbal notes (mint, thyme) and spices (ginger, saffron). A Condrieu full of tension, saline and briny, distinctive and exceptionally pure, with a balance that is both firm and tender.

Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'Empire: created by Christine Vernay in 1998 from vines around forty years old, this is the archetypal fruit-driven wine and the best introduction to the estate’s style. Inimitable aromas of white peach, apricot kernel and blanched almond are carried by the finesse that gives the estate its charm. Elegant, harmonious and fresh, it is best enjoyed young.

Le Pied de Samson: a Viognier classified as IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, named for the giant Samson, who is said to have left his footprint near the estate when he bent down to drink from the Rhône. It shows the grape in its original expression: fruit, deliciousness and freshness. Fragrant without ever being heavy, it is ideal as an aperitif or with subtly flavored dishes.

Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge: made from old Syrah vines in the lieu-dit of the same name, on Tupin’s granite terroir, this Côte-Rôtie is structured, refined and elegant. Deep purplish-ruby in color and subtly full-bodied, it offers lovely aromas of dark fruit, Eastern spices and smoke, with pronounced tannins and a silky, seductive palate. Over time, it develops sumptuous notes of licorice and cigar box, giving it excellent aging potential.

Côte-Rôtie La Blonde du Seigneur: in the style of the Côte Blonde, with 5% Viognier, it combines power and delicacy. Dark in color, it has a mineral, smoky nose of dark fruit, black olive and pepper, lifted by a floral element from the Viognier. Well-formed, beautifully polished tannins, a rounded, flowing palate and an exceptionally long finish: graceful sensuality.

Saint-Joseph La Dame Brune: from vines more than forty-five years old on the granite hillsides of Saint-Joseph, it offers beautiful Syrah notes of dark fruit, spice, pepper and black olive, with lovely minerality. Supple even in its youth yet remarkably structured, it is a wine to savor for its balance and distinctive character.

Saint-Joseph Terres d'Encre: grown on granite soil in the commune of Chavanay, it lives up to its name with its dark color and dark-fruit character. These roughly thirty-year-old Syrah vines already deliver the vibrant fruit, spicy backbone and roundness typical of northern Rhône reds.

Sainte-Agathe: a Syrah classified as IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, from old vines planted within the Condrieu appellation area. A deep nose and generous red-fruit palate, with a direct opening and lovely acidity. Saline freshness and a spicy, peppery backbone capture the character of this cuvée.

Fleurs de Mai: an IGP Syrah whose name recalls the May Flower variety of peach trees once planted on this parcel. Deep aromas of green pepper, black cherry and spice surround a supple, balanced texture that is ripe, persistent and always fresh. It is produced in small quantities.
