History of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

The history of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret dates back to 1620, when the Mongeard family settled in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of the Burgundy wine region. For more than eight generations, this family expertise was patiently passed down, enriched and perfected. It was not until 1945 that the estate officially took its current name, when Eugène Mongeard and his wife Edmée Mugneret united their estates and expertise to create a domaine whose reputation has continued to grow ever since.

Vincent Mongeard, the current owner, perpetuates this tradition with passion and dedication, overseeing every stage of production, from the vineyard to the cellar. Under his leadership, the estate today extends over 30 hectares, with 35 appellations covering some of the most prestigious terroirs in Burgundy, including Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Echezeaux, and Richebourg.

The estate has built a solid reputation, notably for its consistency year after year. Far from resting on its laurels in "great vintages", the Mongeard family places its trust in exemplary regularity. The estate makes a point of producing accessible wines, meeting a growing demand for crus that can be enjoyed young, while retaining excellent ageing potential for those who wish to cellar them.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

Terroir is the very essence of the wines of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. Located between the majestic Château du Clos de Vougeot and the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, in Vosne-Romanée, the estate benefits from a strategic position on exceptional terroirs. The parcels, planted on mid-slope sites, enjoy an ideal south-east orientation, providing the vines with optimal sunlight for slow and regular ripening of the grapes. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, a terroir typical of the Côte de Nuits, renowned for producing wines that are both refined and complex.

The 30 hectares of vines, with an average age of 40 years, are carefully cultivated according to the principles of integrated pest management. The estate purchases no grapes and dedicates itself entirely to the production of its own parcels. Pinot Noir reigns supreme for the red wines, bringing finesse and depth, while Chardonnay and Aligoté are used for the white wines, offering freshness and minerality.

The meticulous care of the vines includes rigorous pruning, green harvesting to regulate yields and constant attention to the quality of the grapes. Every step is carried out by hand, ensuring that only the finest fruit is harvested for the production of exceptional wines.

Winemaking at Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

At Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, winemaking is a precisely mastered art. Each cuvée is vinified with care, according to the characteristics of the appellation and the vintage. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, ensuring strict temperature control for optimal extraction of aromas and tannins. Cold maceration, which often precedes fermentation, gently extracts phenolic compounds, guaranteeing a beautiful colour and aromatic complexity.

Alcoholic fermentation lasts on average 12 to 15 days, depending on the vintage. Once this stage is complete, a delicate pressing is carried out using a pneumatic press, which preserves the wine's finesse by avoiding overly intense extraction of tannins. The wines are then moved to the cellar by gravity and aged in oak barrels for 18 to 22 months, depending on the cuvée.

The barrels, crafted from oak sourced from the Allier and Nièvre forests, bring roundness and subtlety to the wine during ageing. Some of the barrels used are new, while the percentage of new wood varies according to the vintage and the appellation to avoid an over-concentration of woody aromas. Ageing is followed by bottling without filtration, in order to preserve the wine's authenticity and aromatic richness. The estate thus guarantees consistent and irreproachable quality for every vintage.
