History of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

The history of this prestigious Burgundy estate began in 1850, when Jean-Baptiste Laroze established a wine-growing business in Gevrey-Chambertin. The family legacy continued through his son Félix Laroze and then his granddaughter Suzanne. A major turning point came in 1919, when Suzanne Laroze married Alexandre Drouhin, a vineyard owner in Chambolle-Musigny, giving rise to Domaine Drouhin-Laroze as we know it today.

This strategic union marked the beginning of a remarkable expansion of the estate, driven by a forward-looking vision of investing in hillside vineyards. Though risky at the time because of high costs and modest yields, this bold decision proved visionary. Today, the fifth generation, represented by Philippe and Christine Drouhin, carries on this legacy of excellence alongside their children Caroline and Nicolas, who make up the sixth generation.

Terroirs and vineyards of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

The estate stands out for the diversity and exceptional quality of its terroirs, spread across three prestigious villages in the Côte de Nuits. Its annual production of approximately 50,000 bottles breaks down as follows:

46% in Grand Cru appellations

14% in Premier Cru appellations

40% in Village appellations

The vines are cultivated using a considered approach that respects tradition and the environment. Time-honored methods are adapted to contemporary requirements, with an emphasis on meticulous manual work: regular plowing, leaf removal, green harvesting, and hand harvesting. This careful attention to the vines produces grapes of optimal quality that fully express the richness of their terroirs.

Winemaking at Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

Winemaking takes place in a modern winery, combining tradition with technical precision. Each vintage receives an approach tailored to the specific characteristics of the grapes. The wines are aged for 18 months in historic vaulted cellars dating from 1815. Set on two levels, the cellars provide optimal temperature and humidity conditions.

The proportion of new oak barrels varies according to the appellation hierarchy:

80% for the Grands Crus

50% for the Premiers Crus

20% for the village wines

Chambertin Clos de Bèze (1.50 ha)

A true "King of Wines" from vines planted in 1949, this grand cru has a deep purple color and complex aromas of red fruit and licorice.

Chapelle-Chambertin (0.52 ha)

Located at the foot of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, this grand cru combines elegance and nobility, with restrained, subtle tannins.

Latricières-Chambertin (0.67 ha)

Nicknamed "Little Wonder" as far back as the Middle Ages, this wine combines power and elegance, with notes of dark fruit and spice.

Bonnes-Mares (1.5 ha)

Located on the Chambolle-Musigny side, this grand cru offers exceptional complexity, combining power and refinement.

Clos de Vougeot (1 ha)

From the prestigious "des Papes" area, this wine has a remarkable tannic structure and excellent aging potential.

Musigny (0.12 ha)

Acquired in 1996, this rare gem produces one of Burgundy’s most refined wines, distinguished by its silky texture and aromatic complexity.
