History of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

The history of this prestigious Burgundian estate begins in 1850, when Jean-Baptiste Laroze established a wine-growing operation in Gevrey-Chambertin. The family legacy continued with his son Félix Laroze, then his granddaughter Suzanne. A major turning point occurred in 1919, when Suzanne Laroze married Alexandre Drouhin, a proprietor in Chambolle-Musigny, giving birth to Domaine Drouhin-Laroze as we know it today.

This strategic union marks the beginning of a remarkable expansion of the estate, characterized by a forward-thinking vision of investing in hillside vineyards. This bold decision, though risky at the time due to high costs and modest yields, proved visionary. Today, the fifth generation, represented by Philippe and Christine Drouhin, accompanied by their children Caroline and Nicolas constituting the sixth generation, perpetuate this heritage of excellence.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

The estate is distinguished by the diversity and exceptional quality of its terroirs, spread across three prestigious communes of the Côte de Nuits. The annual production of approximately 50,000 bottles is broken down as follows:

46% in Grand Cru appellations

14% in Premier Cru appellations

40% in Village appellations

Vine cultivation is carried out using a reasoned approach, respectful of traditions and the environment. Ancestral methods are adapted to contemporary requirements, favoring meticulous manual work: regular plowing, leaf removal, green harvesting, and manual grape picking. This particular attention paid to the vine makes it possible to obtain grapes of optimal quality, fully expressing the richness of the terroirs.

Vinification at Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

Vinification, carried out in a modern vat room, combines tradition and technical precision. Each vintage benefits from an approach adapted to the specific characteristics of the grapes. Aging takes place for 18 months in historic vaulted cellars dating from 1815, spread over two levels, offering optimal temperature and humidity conditions.

The percentage of new barrels is adapted according to the hierarchy of appellations:

80% for the Grands Crus

50% for the Premiers Crus

20% for the Villages

Let yourself be surprised by the elegance of Dugat-Py, the complexity of Dujac, and the expertise of Harmand-Geoffroy estates. Don't forget to taste the wines of Hubert Lignier, Jérôme Castagnier, Rossignol-Trapet, and Sylvie Esmonin, who each contribute in their own way to the richness and diversity of this exceptional terroir.

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze embodies the excellence of Burgundian viticulture, combining family tradition and measured innovation.
