The 1960 vintage in France was a contrasting year, dominated by capricious weather conditions. A harsh winter with frosts in January and April, followed by a cool and rainy summer (wet July and August), and storms in September slowed the ripening of the grapes. The harvest, early and in the rain from 15 September onwards, resulted in diluted juices and high humidity favouring rot. The result: an overall average to mediocre vintage, requiring intervention in the cellar (strict sorting, chaptalization). The wines, often acidic and light, have limited aging potential, but some display a surprising elegance today, after more than 60 years of evolution.
Rated average (11/20 for reds), this vintage defies expectations with its roundness and suppleness, especially on the Left Bank (Pauillac, Graves). The reds, dominated by merlot, lack concentration but offer fine tannins and aromas of plum, leather and leaves. Notable successes: Château Latour (structured), Montrose (powerful), La Mission Haut-Brion and Gruaud Larose. The dry whites and sweet wines of Sauternes/Barsac excel, rich and balanced despite moderate botrytis (e.g.: a harmonious Yquem).
Mediocre (10/20 reds, 7/20 whites), with relentless rain and frosts in Chablis causing rot and excessive acidity. The pinot noir and chardonnay are light, lacking substance and fruity aromas; rigorous sorting is essential for aromatic, straight wines, best consumed young.
Uneven and unmemorable, impacted by humidity. The vintage cuvées (e.g.: G.H. Mumm Brut, fresh and tart) lack depth, but retain a lively bubble and a historic freshness.
Mediocre Rhône (wines lacking power); Loire and Alsace affected by humidity, producing correct but bland whites.
Today, these 1960s wines charm with their accessibility and their testament to resilient viticulture, ideal for a nostalgic rather than exhilarating tasting experience.
