Château Mouton Baron Philippe wines: buy at the best price

Château Mouton Baron Philippe is the former name of Château d'Armailhac, Cinquième Grand Cru Classé of 1855, in the Pauillac appellation, on the left bank of the Bordeaux vineyard. Owned by the Rothschild family since 1933 and a direct neighbor of Château Mouton Rothschild, this classified growth bore the names Mouton Baron Philippe and then Mouton Baronne Philippe before reclaiming its historic identity. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, its wines embody the classic Pauillac style, combining structure, elegance, and excellent aging potential.

History of Château Mouton Baron Philippe

The earliest traces of the vineyard date back to the 14th century, on lands that were then part of the vast seigneury of Mouton. The estate became autonomous under the d'Armailhacq family, who gave it its name, and the cru, then called Château Mouton d'Armailhacq, was distinguished as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification. From the 19th century onwards, the quality of its wines improved considerably, to the point where they sold for considerably more than those of neighbouring estates.

In 1933, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the neighbouring Château Mouton Rothschild, acquired the estate, drawn by the quality of its terroir. The cru was then renamed Château Mouton Baron Philippe, then Château Mouton Baronne Philippe in 1975, in tribute to Baroness Pauline, the baron's second wife. In 1989, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild restored its historic name of Château d'Armailhac. Today, the estate still belongs to the Rothschild family and is managed by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild teams, alongside Châteaux Mouton Rothschild and Clerc Milon.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Mouton Baron Philippe

The vineyard extends over approximately eighty hectares adjoining Château Mouton Rothschild, to the north and east, at the heart of the Pauillac appellation. Spread across four different ridges, it benefits from all the typicities of the Pauillac terroir. The soils are composed mainly of deep gravels, clay and clay-limestone soils, and gravelly sands, ideal for the great grape varieties of the Médoc.

The grape varieties give pride of place to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The remarkable Cabernet Francs from the Levantines ridge, averaging sixty years of age, constitute a true signature of the cru. The vines, whose average age reaches around forty years, sink their roots into this exceptional terroir, which gives the wines their depth and their typically Pauillac character.

Winemaking at Château Mouton Baron Philippe

The wines benefit from the expertise of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild teams, who also oversee Château Mouton Rothschild. The harvest is picked by hand, then vinified plot by plot in order to respect as closely as possible the expression of each terroir. Since the 2021 vintage, the estate has had a new vat room and a new cellar, opening a new chapter in its history.

Ageing takes place in oak barrels, with a proportion of new wood that brings structure and complexity without masking the fruit. True to the classic Pauillac style, the estate produces powerful and elegant wines with a pronounced tannic structure, distinguished by their excellent ageing potential and their great consistency.

The cuvées of Château Mouton Baron Philippe

Château Mouton Baron Philippe (Pauillac, Cinquième Grand Cru Classé) is the fine wine of the estate now known as Château d'Armailhac. Bottles bearing the names Mouton Baron Philippe and Mouton Baronne Philippe thus correspond to vintages prior to 1989. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, this wine displays a deep colour and an expressive nose of dark fruits, spices, and cedar notes.

The palate, structured and refined, rests on elegant tannins and a fine length, in the pure style of the great Pauillacs. A true wine for ageing, it gains in complexity over the years and pairs ideally with lamb, red meats, game, and mature cheeses. With a more accessible positioning than the neighbouring Premiers Crus, it offers a superb entry point into the world of the classified crus of Pauillac from the Rothschild family.
