Masseto is one of the most legendary wine estates in Italy and the producer of the country's most celebrated Merlot, nicknamed the Petrus of Tuscany. Located in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, this exceptional estate crafts its fine wine from a unique vineyard planted on a rare vein of blue clay. A property of the Frescobaldi family, Masseto embodies the quintessence of a terroir and a grape variety, Merlot, expressed in wines of rare elegance, power and finesse. Alongside its fine wine, the estate also produces Massetino, its second wine.
The history of Masseto begins in the early 1980s, when Marquis Lodovico Antinori founded the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. Advised by the renowned American oenologist André Tchelistcheff, he identified on the estate a hill with exceptional blue clay soils, ideal for merlot, and planted this variety there from 1984. A first experimental vintage was produced in 1986 under the simple name of Merlot, before the wine took on, the following year, the name of Masseto, in reference to the clay blocks locally known as masse.
The wine enjoyed immediate success and quickly established itself among the greatest merlots in the world. The Florentine Frescobaldi family, whose winemaking tradition stretches back more than seven centuries, became the sole owner of Ornellaia and Masseto in 2005. In 2008, Masseto became the first Italian wine sold through the Place de Bordeaux. Now an autonomous entity, the estate inaugurated its own ultra-modern, underground, gravity-fed winery in spring 2019, with the first vintage vinified on-site being the 2018.
The heart of Masseto is a unique vineyard of approximately seven hectares, spread across a hill rising to nearly one hundred and twenty metres above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its singularity lies in its soil, a seam of compact blue clay dating from the Pliocene, several million years old. This mineral structure encourages deep root penetration and good hydration of the vine, lending the wines freshness, depth and a characteristic saline quality.
The hill presents a mosaic of terroirs, with the compact clay of the central section giving the wine its soul and structure, while the sandier, stonier upper slopes and the lower hillside contribute elegance and finesse to the tannins. The Mediterranean climate, long sunny days and sea breezes ensure ideal ripening of the merlot. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 2012, with the utmost respect for the environment.
Winemaking at Masseto is conceived as a continuous exploration of the diversity of the terroir. Each plot and each lot is vinified separately, first in concrete tanks and in barrels, in order to reveal the multiple expressions of merlot. Malolactic fermentation takes place entirely in new barrels, before the final blending of the different lots.
The fine wine is then aged for approximately twenty-four months in barrels, then refined for an additional year in bottle before release, in a style inspired by the greatest wines of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. This pursuit of balance between opulence and freshness, power and refinement, is the signature of the estate's wines. Masseto's expertise has also attracted some of the greatest talents in oenology, a testament to consistent quality across vintages.
Masseto: the fine wine and icon of the estate, a pure merlot from the unique blue clay vineyard of Bolgheri. Produced in very limited quantities, around thirty to thirty-five thousand bottles per year, it displays a deep and complex aromatic profile, blending ripe black cherry, blackberry, plum and blackcurrant, enhanced by notes of cocoa, cedar, soft tobacco and a saline minerality. On the palate, it combines sumptuous opulence, a high-impact tannic structure, great freshness and refined elegance, with an ageing potential of several decades. Classified as Toscana IGT, it is considered one of the greatest Super Tuscans ever produced.
Massetino: the estate's second wine, produced since the 2017 vintage from barrels not selected for the fine wine. A blend of merlot and a share of cabernet franc, it stands out for its elegance, silky tannins and indulgent fruitiness, with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, cocoa and soft spices. More approachable in its youth than the fine wine, refined and vibrant, it offers a superb glimpse of the Masseto style while also possessing a fine future in the cellar.
