The Domaine de l'Anglore by Eric Pfifferling: great wines from the Rhône valley, from Tavel and Lirac (Rhone Sud)
The Domaine de l'Anglore is located in the Gard department, in Tavel (between Avignon and Uzès), and the vineyard area has grown considerably, expanding from just 4 hectares to nearly 16 hectares of vines, notably supplemented by a few acres on the hillsides of the Vaunage, between Nîmes and Sommières in the Gard.

In just a few years, the estate has gone from obscurity to the spotlight, and today all discerning enthusiasts are eager to get their hands on the wines of Eric Pfifferling, whose production has continued to improve. Until 2002, Eric Pfifferling was in fact both a beekeeper and a winemaker, but he brought his grapes to the cooperative. Then, when the severe floods of 2002 swept away his beehives, he decided to leave the cooperative cellar and produce his first cuvées of L'Anglore. He chose to farm organically (in accordance with ECOCERT certification standards), abandoning chemical treatments. The soil is worked to preserve life and the balance between "vine stocks" and "weeds", adapted to each terroir as well as to climatic conditions. The vines are planted primarily with grenache, cinsault, clairette, carignan, mourvèdre, syrah, and bourboulenc. Since his two sons joined him, the Domaine de l'Anglore has continued to develop, and even though it is located mainly within the AOC Tavel appellation (an AOC reserved exclusively for Rhône rosé), the estate's red wines are produced as Vin de France and Lirac. The harvest is done by hand and the grapes are placed in small crates. After a maceration period, they are vinified as whole clusters through carbonic maceration. The resulting wines are neither filtered nor mechanically pumped, so as to respect and highlight their natural, living characteristics. His low yields do not prevent him from producing perfectly balanced rosé wines, sometimes considered among the finest rosés in France. Far removed from the pale rosés of Provence, the Tavel from Domaine de l'Anglore is perfectly suited to its sandy-silty terroirs, with a particularly distinctive colour leaning towards a light ruby red. Rich yet subtle and full-bodied, the Tavel de l'Anglore is singular — neither red nor rosé, in fact the colour of a claret — but once you taste it, you cannot help but fall for it: it is dense and deep, yet also extremely fresh. This Tavel rosé can be cellared for 2 to 4 years. The Cuvée Nizon is made from a base of century-old Grenache Noir vines along with a little Cinsault, Clairette and Aramon, and the vinification is carried out using whole clusters, under CO², then in concrete tanks or demi-muids with very little sulphur added before bottling. It is fair to say that l'Anglore offers refined and expressive cuvées, essential for lovers of natural wine and gastronomic rosé.
