The 1977 vintage in Burgundy is a difficult and minor year, marked by a cool and damp season that hindered ripening. The reds (Pinot Noir) suffered as a result: light, thin and often marked by vegetal notes, they lack flesh and are best enjoyed without delay, with rare successes in the Côte de Nuits. The whites (Chardonnay) fared slightly better, in a fresh and taut style, from Meursault to Chablis, but remain modest as well. The aging potential is very low, and the vast majority of cuvées are today ready to drink, indeed many are well past their peak. Sandwiched between the powerful and sunny 1976 and the great 1978, the 1977 remains a minor vintage, best left to enthusiasts of curiosities.
