The History of Château Haut Gaussens

Château Haut Gaussens was founded in 1941 under the impetus of Daniel Lhuillier, who, together with his wife Catherine, laid the first stones of this family estate. Located in Vérac, a small Bordeaux commune on the border of the Fronsac appellation, the vineyard flourished through the meticulous and passionate work of successive generations. Michel Lhuillier, Daniel's son, took over management in the 1970s, initiating an essential restructuring of the estate.

Since 2001, Stéphane and Delphine Lhuillier, representatives of the third generation, have led the estate with a modern approach that is respectful of traditions. Under their direction, the estate has obtained the HVE3 certification (High Environmental Value), reflecting their commitment to the environment. Today, Château Haut Gaussens extends over 15 hectares of vines, cultivated with care and passion to produce wines of exceptional quality.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Haut Gaussens

The terroir of Château Haut Gaussens rests on an ideal combination of clay-limestone soils. The clay, rich in minerals, ensures freshness and tannin concentration, while the limestone subsoil guarantees optimal water regulation. This synergy between soil and subsoil allows for consistent, high-quality production, where every bunch of grapes benefits from the best conditions to express its potential.

The estate practices sustainable viticulture with rigorous monitoring of each parcel. The vines are naturally grassed, worked between the rows, and leaf-thinned in summer to optimize sun exposure. Meticulous management of the grape load per vine ensures perfect ripeness. These practices, combined with precise ripeness checks before harvest, guarantee high-quality yields.

Winemaking at Château Haut Gaussens

The winemaking process at Château Haut Gaussens is a model of excellence and precision. After meticulous manual sorting of the grapes, a cold maceration of 3 to 5 days is carried out to extract primary aromas and colors. Fermentation is monitored with rigorous temperature control, and vatting lasts between 3 and 4 weeks depending on the vats. A hot maceration at the end of fermentation enhances the intensity of flavors.

Aging, a key element of the wines' identity, varies according to the cuvée: on fine lees to preserve freshness, or in oak barrels for more complex and oaky profiles. This attention to every detail ensures wines that are both elegant and rich in aromas.
