History of Domaine de la Solitude

Domaine de la Solitude takes its name from its past as a hermitage, nestled in the forest away from the world. This very ancient cru of Martillac has belonged since 1854 to the religious community of the Sainte-Famille, whose sisters remain its owners. The estate thus recalls the essential role played by ecclesiastical institutions in the development of Bordeaux's historic vineyards.

In 1993, the nuns entrusted the management of the vineyard, for a period of forty years, to Olivier Bernard and the team at Domaine de Chevalier, the prestigious neighbouring Grand Cru Classé de Graves. This partnership has revealed the full potential of this superb terroir: the white and red wines of La Solitude now rank among the most highly regarded crus of the Pessac-Léognan appellation and are exported worldwide. The same team today oversees the estate as well as the neighbouring Château Lespault-Martillac.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine de la Solitude

Located approximately eighteen kilometres south-west of Bordeaux, Domaine de la Solitude spreads its vineyard over some thirty hectares at the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Its plots rest on a gravelly terroir typical of the Graves, surrounded by forests, which imparts finesse, freshness and mineral purity to the wines.

The red grape varieties give pride of place to Cabernet Sauvignon (56%), complemented by Merlot (36%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and Petit Verdot (4%). For the whites, Sauvignon (65%) dominates Sémillon (35%). Managed as a garden vineyard, worked in rhythm with the seasons and with respect for the environment, the estate produces on average 90,000 bottles of red and 20,000 bottles of white.

Winemaking at Domaine de la Solitude

The wines of Domaine de la Solitude are crafted by the technical team at Domaine de Chevalier, a guarantee of first-rate expertise. The harvests are carried out by hand, followed by precise sorting to ensure the quality of the crop. The red wines are vinified in traditional concrete vats, with their malolactic fermentation taking place in barrels.

The Fine Wine red is then aged for around fifteen months, with approximately one quarter new barrels, in order to preserve the brilliance of the fruit. The whites, for their part, are aged on lees in barrels for nine to ten months, without malolactic fermentation, which retains all their freshness, purity and tension. This careful winemaking produces precise and elegant wines, faithful to their gravelly terroir.

The cuvées of Domaine de la Solitude

Domaine de la Solitude Pessac-Léognan rouge is the estate's fine wine, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Its deep colour is followed by a nose of ripe dark fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), flowers and mineral notes, underlined by discreet oak. The palate is broad and dense, combining roundness and freshness on polished tannins. Both supple and structured, it is an elegant wine for ageing that can be enjoyed from three to fifteen years depending on the vintage.

Domaine de la Solitude Pessac-Léognan blanc is the estate's fine white wine, crafted from Sauvignon and Sémillon. Aged on lees in barrels, it reveals a bouquet of pear, white peach, citrus and boxwood, enhanced by flint and toasted notes. The palate is direct and broad, seducing with its purity, freshness and beautiful length. A dry white of great elegance, perfect with fish and seafood.

Prieuré de la Solitude (Pessac-Léognan) is the estate's second wine, made from young vines. More open in its youth, with tender tannins, it highlights the juicy crunchiness of the fruit and the typicity of the gravelly, forested terroir. It is a classic Pessac-Léognan, best enjoyed within its first ten years.

Notre Dame de la Solitude (Graves) is a pleasurable and approachable cuvée, suited to every occasion. Fruity and easy to share, this Graves wine offers a fine introduction to the world of the estate.

Rosé de la Solitude is a premium rosé that radiates fruit and freshness, ideal for the finest tables and terraces. The estate also offers La Petite Lune, a premium Bordeaux in the refined tradition of the house.
