At the heart of Pauillac, Château Lafite Rothschild, Premier Grand Cru Classé of 1855, elevates the art of Bordeaux wines to its quintessence across 112 hectares of mythical terroir. Carruades de Lafite shines as the second wine par excellence: a refined alternative to the Fine Wine, enriched with a majority of Merlot for an irresistible suppleness. This rare nectar, born of controlled yields and well-drained soils, captivates with its harmonious complexity and ageing potential.
The legacy of Château Lafite Rothschild dates back to the 13th century, with vines attested as early as 1234, crowned in 1855 as the First of the First Growths. Acquired in 1868 by Baron James de Rothschild, it overcame phylloxera, wars and crises to be reborn under Barons Éric and Saskia. Carruades de Lafite takes its name from the eponymous plateau, purchased in 1845, initially vinified separately as a distinct cru in the 19th century. In the 20th century, it became the second wine under the name Moulin des Carruades until the 1980s, before reclaiming its original name in 1982, a confusing but enriching transition, as Christophe Salin explains. Since 1986, Carruades de Lafite has established itself as an institution, with vintages rated up to 98/100, perpetuating the history of Lafite under the leadership of Éric Kohler and Christophe Congé.
The terroir of Château Lafite Rothschild, a carpet of fine gravels, aeolian sands and tertiary limestone over 112 hectares, offers ideal drainage and perfect sun exposure, resisting climatic challenges. For Carruades de Lafite, the focus is on the Carruades plateau, 50 hectares of deep clay-gravel to the west of the château, complemented by a touch of Saint-Estèphe. These dedicated parcels, planted with 50-70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30-50% Merlot and up to 5% Cabernet Franc/Petit Verdot, favor young vines (under 10 years old) for a distinct personality: rounder and fruitier thanks to the dominant Merlot.
Winemaking at Château Lafite Rothschild, a ballet of traditional precision, highlights Carruades de Lafite through its refined parcel selection. Manual harvests and meticulous sorting precede alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled wood, cement and stainless steel vats, with gentle macerations and light pumping over to extract lively tannins and intense colors. Since 2010, a dedicated Merlot vat room and one for malolactic fermentation enhance the superior proportion of Merlot. Aging in French oak barrels (40% new, from the in-house cooperage) refines this cuvée without excessive oakiness, preserving its native roundness. This approach, rooted in 150 years of expertise, forges Carruades de Lafite into a supple, complex wine faithful to its terroir.
Carruades de Lafite captures the pure essence of Château Lafite Rothschild: a second wine from Pauillac where generous Merlot and gravelly terroir weave a rare harmony, between immediate pleasure and timeless depth.
