Domaine Niellon is, above all, a family story in Burgundy. Three generations of winemakers have worked together to produce consistently high-quality wines, vintage after vintage, despite the unpredictable weather of recent years and the repeated devastation of storms before harvest.
Based in Chassagne Montrachet and farmed using sustainable practices, this 7.5-hectare estate is known for its great whites from the Côte de Beaune (Chassagne Montrachet village, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru les Vergers, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru Les Chaumées, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru Clos Saint Jean, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru Les Chenevottes, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru La Maltroie, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru Les Champgains, Batard Montrachet, Bourgogne Aligoté, Chevalier Montrachet), as well as its small production of reds (Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru Clos Saint Jean, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru La Maltroie, Chassagne Montrachet village), which accounts for a third of its output. If Niellon’s wines sell out so quickly, it is because they consistently offer exceptional concentration and longevity, thanks to a command of every element (low yields, old vines, measured chaptalization)—and at prices that remain affordable in a Burgundy market that has seen substantial inflation lately, especially among its star estates (Leflaive, Comtes Lafon, Coche Dury, Rousseau, etc.).
In recent news from the estate, the latest assessments by leading critics such as Michel Bettane and Neal Martin (Robert Parker WA) suggest that the newly released 2013 vintage from Domaine Niellon will be one to age for many years, combining notable freshness with impressive richness. Very promising!
