What are the emblematic grape varieties used in Loire wines?

The Loire Valley is one of the most diverse wine regions in France, with a remarkably varied range of grape varieties. Among whites, Muscadet is based on Melon de Bourgogne, while Chenin Blanc reigns supreme in the appellations of Anjou and Touraine, giving birth to Vouvray, Savennières, and the great sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon. Sauvignon Blanc, for its part, expresses itself brilliantly at Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. On the red side, Cabernet Franc is the king grape, particularly in the appellations of Chinon, Bourgueil, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, offering wines that are both fruity and elegant.
