History of Domaine Bruno Colin

The Colin family has been cultivating vines in Chassagne-Montrachet for several generations. Heir to a winemaking lineage deeply rooted in the Côte de Beaune, Bruno Colin grew up surrounded by vines and wine, learning alongside his father Michel Colin-Deleger the fundamentals of demanding viticulture, anchored in respect for the terroir.

After spending over a decade within the Colin-Deleger family estate, Bruno Colin decided in 2003 to forge his own path. A vineyard-sharing agreement led to the creation of several distinct entities: Domaine Philippe Colin on one hand, and Domaine Bruno Colin on the other. In 2004, Bruno released his first solo vintage, marking the beginning of a personal and ambitious viticultural adventure.

From his very first cuvées, Bruno Colin deliberately distanced himself from the round, oak-marked wines that characterized certain Burgundy productions of that era. His vision was clear: mineral, taut, straight, frank, and precise wines that give voice to the terroir rather than technique. This bold direction quickly earned him international recognition, and his cuvées became the object of growing demand from sommeliers, importers, and enthusiasts worldwide. Today, Bruno Colin, the fourth generation of family winemakers, perpetuates and amplifies an exceptional viticultural heritage.

Domaine Bruno Colin's Terroirs and Vines

Domaine Bruno Colin's vineyard extends over approximately 8.75 hectares, divided into about fifty micro-parcels spread across five communes in the Côte de Beaune. Approximately six hectares are devoted to white grape varieties and three hectares to Pinot Noir for red wines. This mosaic of terroirs is one of the estate's great assets: each parcel presents distinctive characteristics of soil, exposure, and microclimate that translate directly into the aromatic expression of the wines.

The clay-limestone soils, typical of the Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Saint-Aubin appellations, give white wines a distinctive minerality, beautiful tension, and persistent freshness. This limestone subsoil, rich in marine fossils from the Jurassic era, promotes deep vine rooting and allows it to draw mineral elements that express themselves eloquently in the estate's Chardonnays. Further south, the terroirs of Santenay and Dezize-les-Maranges provide a different expression, with fruitier and more indulgent notes for the Pinot Noirs.

Bruno Colin manages his vines according to the principles of organic farming and sustainable viticulture. He favors mechanical soil work, with regular plowing and hilling to aerate the earth and allow the vine to express itself fully. The four seasons mark the rhythm of vineyard life: winter pruning, spring debudding, summer trellising, leaf removal according to the vintage. Yield control is a constant priority, ensuring optimal grape concentration. Harvesting is done entirely by hand by a team of about forty harvesters, mostly regulars at the estate.

Domaine Bruno Colin's Vinification Methods

In the cellar, Bruno Colin implements precise and minimally interventionist vinification, always in service of the terroir and vintage expression. After rigorous initial sorting in the vineyard, the grapes undergo a second pass on a vibrating sorting table upon arrival at the winery, to admit only the finest bunches.

For white wines, vinification follows a proven protocol: gentle pneumatic pressing to preserve the aromatic finesse of the juices, followed by static settling before barrel aging. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak barrels on fine lees, with a proportion of 20 to 25% new barrels. Aging lasts approximately 12 months in barrels, after which the wines are racked and blended in stainless steel tanks for an additional 3 to 6 months of rest before bottling at the estate. This tank passage allows the wines to stabilize and harmonize their various components, achieving a clear and precise expression of their terroir of origin.

For red wines, the harvest is 100% destemmed before being placed in tanks. A few days of cold maceration precede alcoholic fermentation, conducted with gentle pump-overs and meticulous temperature control. Aging then takes place in oak barrels for approximately 12 months, with about 25 to 40% new barrels depending on the cuvée. The red wines are then blended in stainless steel tanks for 3 to 6 months before bottling. This approach gives the estate's Pinot Noirs beautiful tannic structure, intense fruity aromas, and remarkable length on the palate.

Since the 2013 vintage, Bruno Colin has wax-sealed the majority of his bottles to best preserve the taste qualities of his wines over time. This artisanal gesture reflects the attention paid to every detail, from vine to bottle.

Domaine Bruno Colin's Cuvées

Domaine Bruno Colin offers an exceptional range of 22 appellations, covering two Grands Crus, fourteen Premiers Crus, and several village appellations.

The Grands Crus

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru: From one of Burgundy's most famous Grands Crus, shared between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, this exceptional white wine develops incomparable aromatic richness: candied citrus, buttery notes, white flowers, and deep minerality. Powerful, ample, and with great length on the palate.

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru: Located on the steep limestone slopes above Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet is one of Burgundy's most distinctive terroirs. Bruno Colin's version stands out for its crystalline elegance, mineral tension of rare precision, and aromas of absolute finesse.

White Premiers Crus of Chassagne-Montrachet

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Morgeot: One of Chassagne-Montrachet's most extensive premier crus. This wine reveals beautiful roundness and aromatic depth marked by ripe yellow fruits, toasted almonds, and a floral touch. Its generous structure gives it excellent aging potential.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly: A rare cuvée highly sought after by enthusiasts. Located on the boundary with Puligny-Montrachet, En Remilly produces a wine of remarkable clarity and aromatic intensity, with beautiful chiseled minerality and a finesse on the palate characteristic of the commune's highest terroirs.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie: This premier cru produces a white wine with complex aromatic richness: citrus, stone fruits, almonds, and white flowers blend harmoniously on an elegant mineral foundation. It is a balanced cuvée, both fresh and generous, that expresses itself magnificently after a few years in the cellar.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte: From a 0.24-hectare parcel with vines planted in 1951 and 1977, this wine impresses with its saline dimension and deep minerality. Cultivated organically on privileged clay-limestone soils, these old vines deliver concentrated matter of great complexity, with aromas of fresh hazelnut, citrus, and sweet spices.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées: From a 0.42-hectare terroir located at the northern end of Chassagne-Montrachet, bordering Saint-Aubin. Its name evokes the "chaumes," these lands formerly left fallow. This wine is characterized by its singular freshness and beautiful aromatic precision, with a taut and distinctly mineral finish.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes: This premier cru benefits from excellent exposure and produces a white wine recognized for its complexity and finesse. Notes of white fruits, light honey, and acacia flowers, supported by beautiful mineral structure.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers and other Premiers Crus: The range is completed by other premier cru cuvées that all illustrate Bruno Colin's ability to reveal the typicity of each parcel with precision and consistency, vintage after vintage.

White Premiers Crus of Puligny-Montrachet

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière: From a very well-exposed parcel at the top of the hillside overlooking the village of Puligny-Montrachet, this white wine embodies the elegance and finesse of the appellation. Its pronounced minerality, tension, and aromas of citrus and white flowers make it a benchmark cuvée. It pairs beautifully with noble fish, seafood, or poultry in cream sauce.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles: An exceptional cuvée from a premier terroir of Puligny-Montrachet, Les Demoiselles produces a wine of great elegance, with delicate aromas of jasmine, hawthorn, and fresh lemon, carried by incisive and persistent minerality.
