History of Domaine Keller

The history of Domaine Keller dates back to 1789, when Johann Leonhard Keller, who had emigrated from Switzerland because of the turmoil of the French Revolution, settled in Dalsheim. There he acquired four hectares of the “Oberer Hubacker” plot, a historic vineyard that had belonged to the local abbey. This founding act was far more than a simple land transaction: it marked the beginning of a winemaking journey that would span more than two centuries.

For nearly two hundred years, the estate built a strong reputation for its sweet, fruit-driven wines. The property has long enjoyed considerable prestige, particularly for its noble, richly sweet wines. The eleventh generation brought about a decisive transformation. Before joining the family estate, Klaus-Peter trained in Burgundy, working with renowned winemakers including Domaine Rousseau. With this Burgundian experience and a degree in enology from Geisenheim, he took the reins with his wife Julia in 2001.

The name of the iconic G-Max cuvée preserves the memory of this family history: the “G” pays tribute to Georg, Klaus-Peter’s great-grandfather and the first member of the family to sell bottled wine, beginning in 1921. He was the true founder of Weingut Keller as we know it today, while “Max” honors Maximilian, Klaus-Peter’s eldest son. Today, their son Felix also works alongside his parents, carrying forward an exceptional family legacy. Gault Millau named the estate “Winzer des Jahrzehnts,” or Winemaker of the Decade, an accolade that captures its meteoric rise to the pinnacle of world viticulture.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Keller

Domaine Keller owns 21 hectares of vineyards in the Wonnegau subregion of Rheinhessen, 70% of which are planted with Riesling. About 70% of this area is classified as Grosse Lage—the German equivalent of Grands Crus—under the VDP classification. Its emblematic vineyards include Hubacker in Dalsheim, and Kirchspiel, Morstein, and Abtserde in Westhofen.

Each terroir has its own signature and contributes to the diversity of the range:

Hubacker (Dalsheim): This historic four-hectare plot is planted almost exclusively with Riesling on yellow limestone soils. Its southeastern exposure favors late ripening and great concentration. The average yield has been maintained at 45 hl/ha over a number of years. In 2000, a six-meter limestone tower was erected there to mark the importance of this foundational cru.

Morstein (Westhofen): This Nierstein vineyard is one of the largest Grosse Lage sites in Rheinhessen. Its heavy clays over limestone bedrock produce the most powerful and mineral-driven Rieslings in Keller’s range.

Kirchspiel (Westhofen): A cooler, east-facing cru that produces Rieslings of remarkable precision and tension. Julia Keller, whose family owned many prestigious plots in Westhofen, brings an intimate knowledge of these terroirs to the estate.

Abtserde / Abts E®.de (Westhofen): This site, mentioned in documents dating from 1284, holds a secret: it has the highest level of active limestone in all of Westhofen, comparable to that of the Grand Cru Les Clos in Chablis, lending its wines added precision and freshness.

The vineyards lie on limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the wines’ distinctive character and quality. Throughout the growing season, each plot is tended meticulously according to its soil characteristics. Pruning, leaf removal, and shoot positioning are all done by hand. Canopy height is adjusted to each vineyard’s water availability to optimize late ripening.

Winemaking at Domaine Keller

Weingut Keller’s winemaking philosophy rests on a fundamental principle: letting the terroir express itself without restraint. In the cellar, a noninvasive approach keeps intervention to the minimum necessary, preserving the grapes’ natural potential. The musts ferment spontaneously at low temperatures with native yeasts from the vineyard. Fermentation lasts at least eight to ten weeks, and up to six months for sweet wines.

The wines are fermented and aged in large French oak casks. They then mature in bottle for at least six months before release. Depending on the desired style, some cuvées are aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve their aromatic purity, while the Grosse Gewächse spend time in large traditional wooden casks.

Special care is taken to obtain healthy, physiologically ripe grapes through selective hand harvesting. At harvest, often later than at neighboring estates, the grapes are rigorously sorted both in the vineyard and in the cellar, with every imperfect berry removed. This exacting approach at every stage, from vine to bottle, accounts for the exceptional concentration, purity, and minerality that characterize all the estate’s cuvées.

The Cuvées of Domaine Keller

Riesling G-Max

G-Max Riesling is made in tiny quantities from the finest GG plots selected by Klaus-Peter. Originally intended for his own consumption, it is now one of the world’s most sought-after and acclaimed Rieslings. The 2001 vintage was the first for this now-cult cuvée. Only 1,500 bottles are produced per vintage, making it one of the world’s most expensive dry Rieslings. Today, almost the entire production is sold in the “Kellerkiste,” a case containing five bottles of Riesling GG and one bottle of G-Max. Wines of this caliber are distinguished by their extraordinary concentration, energy, and brilliance, and need extended cellaring to reveal their full complexity.

Riesling GG Hubacker (Dalsheim)

This Riesling GG comes from the four hectares of vines the Keller family has owned since 1789, planted on yellow limestone soils with a southeastern exposure. The 40-year-old Riesling vines ripen later than those of any of the estate’s other Grosse Gewächse. Hubacker is one of Keller’s richest Riesling GGs. Jancis Robinson regularly calls it the “Montrachet of Germany,” highlighting the richness of its bouquet, its power, and its delicate finish.

Riesling GG Kirchspiel (Westhofen)

From an east-facing cru with cooler temperatures than Morstein, this Riesling GG stands out for its tension, precision, and incisive minerality. The Von Der Fels cuvée, often described as a “baby G-Max,” is a blend from young vines in GG plots on limestone soils: 60% Hubacker and 40% Kirchspiel. It offers an ideal introduction to the estate’s grand crus.

Riesling GG Morstein (Westhofen)

Morstein is generally the most powerful GG in Keller’s range. Aromatic without being exuberant, rich, deep, and enveloping, it combines power and finesse with a persistent mineral finish. It is one of the estate’s most important and sought-after cuvées. It is sold exclusively in the estate’s mixed twelve-bottle case.

Riesling GG Abts E® / Abtserde (Westhofen)

The name Abtserde, meaning “Abbot’s Earth,” belongs to an old vineyard site mentioned in documents from 1284. Klaus-Peter Keller acquired this plot in 2006. It has the highest level of active limestone of any vineyard in Westhofen, giving its wines added precision and freshness comparable to the Grand Cru Les Clos in Chablis. This is the cru that needs the most time for all its elements to come together harmoniously.

Riesling GG Bürgel (Nierstein)

This Riesling GG comes from a 0.3-hectare plot acquired in 2009. The red slate soils on steep slopes overlooking the Rhine differ radically from the limestone of Westhofen and Dalsheim, giving the wine a unique, darker, more taut character.

Riesling RR (Kirchspiel)

The “RR” cuvée generally comes from a little-known red-soil plot within Kirchspiel. This barrel rarely ferments completely dry, and the Kellers appreciate the wine’s natural balance: slightly off-dry (feinherb), with remarkable freshness and drinkability. It is a bottle for those in the know, both approachable and profound.
