Carré Frères

Champagne Carré Frères wines: buy at the best price

Based in Trépail, at the heart of the Montagne de Reims, Champagne Carré Frères is a family estate run by brothers Édouard and Victor Carré, the fourth generation of a line of winegrowers whose roots go back to 1894. The vineyard spans approximately twenty-one hectares of old vines spread across Trépail, Villers-Marmery and Verzy, in the Montagne de Reims, as well as around Essoyes and Les Riceys, in the Côte des Bar. Committed to organic farming and biodynamics, the Carré brothers practice a minimalist, single-plot vinification, aged in oak barrels, that reveals the purity of each terroir. Driven by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, their champagnes stand out for their freshness, minerality and drinkability.

History of Champagne Carré Frères

The history of Champagne Carré Frères is rooted in a long family winemaking tradition dating back to 1894, with its modern structure taking shape in 1997. The vines cultivated today come from both sides of the family: the mother passed down precious plots in Verzy, while the father held vines in Trépail, where the estate's cellar is located. As heirs to this heritage, the two brothers have successfully married respect for ancestral practices with modern innovation to elevate the Champagne terroir.

As representatives of the fourth generation, Édouard and Victor Carré have set a clear direction for the estate: to craft single-plot cuvées, most often from a single vine, capable of faithfully conveying the singularity of each site. A quest for precision, careful integration of oak, natural fermentations, and long aging: this vision has quickly elevated Champagne Carré Frères among the new generation of Champagne growers and lovers of living wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne Carré Frères

The estate draws on some twenty hectares of old vines rooted in two major regions of Champagne. In the Montagne de Reims, the vineyard spreads across the chalky soils of Trépail (Premier Cru), Villers-Marmery (Premier Cru), and Verzy (Grand Cru). Trépail is a renowned enclave for its Chardonnay, the estate's predominant grape variety, while Pinot Noir flourishes on the Grand Cru of Verzy. Further south, in the Côte des Bar, the plots of Essoyes and Les Riceys rest on clay-limestone soils with Kimmeridgian marls, the preferred land for Pinot Noir.

Among the iconic lieu-dits are Le Champ Jeanvrai, in Trépail, planted with Chardonnay in 1964, and Les Maladries, in Verzy, planted with Pinot Noir in 2005. Guided by a deep passion for natural viticulture, the Carré brothers tend these old vines using organic and biodynamic farming, with the utmost respect for the soils and biodiversity, with manual harvesting and low yields that concentrate the full expression of the terroir.

Winemaking at Champagne Carré Frères

In the cellar, the approach is deliberately minimalist and resolutely single-plot: each plot is vinified separately to preserve its identity. Aging takes place entirely in oak barrels, from demi-muids to 300- to 450-liter pieces, often new, which lend the house style a pronounced oaky signature and great structure. The wines rest for a long time on lees, both in barrel and in bottle, and fermentations are conducted with restraint, most often using indigenous yeasts.

This low-interventionist winemaking approach is paired with very low dosages, in extra-brut, so as to let the purity of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir speak for themselves. Some cuvées undergo malolactic fermentation, and all benefit from long aging before a late disgorgement. The result is recognizable from the very first glass: precise, taut, mineral Champagnes of great drinkability, shaped by patience and an attention to detail.

The cuvées of Champagne Carré Frères

Le Champ Jeanvrai is a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs from a single plot planted in 1964 in Trépail, a Premier Cru of the Montagne de Reims. Aged in oak barrels, it offers a pure and mineral expression of Chardonnay, with delicate notes of white flowers, candied lemon, and brioche, carried by a beautiful saline freshness.

Les Maladries is a 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs from a single plot planted in 2005 on the Grand Cru of Verzy. Harvested by hand, pressed and then vinified in new 300-liter oak barrels, followed by thirty months on lees in bottle before a late disgorgement and an extra-brut dosage of 2 g/L. Deep and structured, it reveals the power and finesse of Verzy's Pinot Noir, marked by a rich, indulgent woody character.

Le Champ des Maladries is a parcel blend combining 60% Chardonnay from Trépail (Le Champ Jeanvrai plot, planted in 1964, Premier Cru) and 40% Pinot Noir from Verzy (Les Maladries plot, planted in 2005, Grand Cru). Vinified for eleven months in oak barrels with malolactic fermentation, dosed in extra-brut at 2 g/L, it unfolds an elegant nose of white flowers, yellow fruits, and subtle woody notes, in a complex and refined whole.

Origine is a Coteaux Champenois Blanc — a still wine from the appellation — crafted from 100% Chardonnay grown on the chalky soils of Trépail (Premier Cru). Vinified with indigenous yeasts and aged for two years in 228-liter oak barrels, it displays a golden, luminous color, a delicate nose of ginger, honey, and saline notes, then a palate where vivacity and minerality are balanced over candied citrus, in a lingering finish.
