Our view on the 1981 vintage

Vintage preceding the mythical 1982, the grape harvest in Bordeaux was abundantly watered at the beginning of October, thus diluting a number of wines which could have turned out to be excellent… As a result, a chaptalisation was necessary to find the degrees of alcohol that the water had lost. Despite everything, several Bordeaux wines such as 1981 Pauillac, 1981 Margaux, 1981 Saint Julien and 1981 Pomerol gave good wines. In 1981 white Bordeaux, the wines have passed and in 1981 Sauternes, they can sometimes appear a little thin. The 1981 Burgundy wines experienced severe frosts in April and end in July hail, which led to a largely undervalued harvest, leading the red Burgundy wines to be less and of shorter cellaring potential, whilst the 1981 white burgundy wines are rather weak. In Champagne, the frost hardly hit the vineyards, and only few reputed houses such as the Champagne Bollinger, Krug champagne and champagne Salon were able to produce very beautiful Champagne wines, and released 1981 Vintage Champagne of exceptional quality and rarity. No notable successes for the wines of the Rhone Valley or the Loire wines, but a few Rieslings to be cellared for the wines of Alsace.
