A flagship estate of the Pommard appellation
The Domaine du Comte Armand (also known as Domaine des Epeneaux) is based in Pommard in Burgundy and was founded in 1826. It enjoys a great reputation and has always produced powerful, rich wines with a distinctive character.
The most famous of these is the celebrated Pommard 1er cru Clos des Epeneaux, a monopole. The estate covers a total area of 9 hectares cultivated biodynamically. In winemaking, Paul Zinetti succeeded Benjamin Leroux in 2014, having worked alongside him for 4 years. The harvest is 100% destemmed, but not crushed, in order to preserve as many whole berries as possible. Depending on the appellation and the age of the vines, the wines are aged for 18 to 22 months in barrels, with up to 40% new oak for the old vines of the Clos des Epeneaux. The wines are neither fined nor filtered before bottling. The Clos des Epeneaux covers 5.25 Ha, planted at 12,000 vines per Ha, and straddles the Grands and Petits Epenots. This great red fine wine from Comte Armand is generally powerful and spicy, yet capable of great finesse and refinement, as well as exceptional length. It generally reaches its peak after 10 to 15 years of cellaring, during which its tannins slowly mellow. The red Burgundies from Comte Armand are as follows: Auxey Duresses, the Auxey-Duresses 1er cru, the Pommard 1er cru Clos des Epeneaux (another Pommard 1er cru was discontinued after 2011), the Volnay village, and the Volnay 1er cru Les Fremiets. Two white Burgundies complete this range: the Bourgogne Condemaine and the Bourgogne Aligoté. All of these wines are of very fine quality and benefit from sustained attention both in the vineyard and during vinification. The prices of the wines reflect their outstanding quality (especially that of the Clos des Epenots), but their quality makes them well worth seeking out, as at their peak, the Pommard Clos des Epenots and the Volnay 1er cru Fremiets are excellent choices to recommend to all enthusiasts in search of great red wines from the Côte de Beaune, and among recent vintages, the 2015 can be considered a particularly outstanding success.
