The Clos Naudin estate was created in Vouvray in 1910 by Armand Foreau. His son André succeeded him before his own son Philippe Foreau vinified his first vintage in 1982, raising the estate's reputation to great heights. Since 2007, Vincent Foreau, Philippe's son, has joined him and consistently maintained Clos Naudin's production among the finest Loire whites. Here, the notion of terroir is no empty word, and in Vouvray, the aim of Clos Naudin is to nurture the microbial life of the soils, in keeping with ancestral traditions and a biologically driven approach. Harvesting is done by hand, with meticulous sorting, with the goal of producing either sparkling wines, still dry wines, off-dry wines, or moelleux.

The TOP winemakers of Loire

No chemical herbicides or pesticides for their nearly fifty-year-old vines, only ploughing and organic fertilisers. The estate has been organic-certified since 2015. The magnificent Chenin vines flourish on the majestic terroir of the Perruches, producing juices that aim to be the most sincere expression of a soil and a climate. The clay and flint soils of the Perruches, of varying depths overlying the tuffeau subsoil, thus confer elegance, finesse and an enormous ageing potential to the wines.

In terms of the typicity of Foreau wines, the fine bubbles lend tension and salinity to the sparkling Vouvray wines. The dry wines of Clos Naudin are superbly taut, even when they prove to be very ripe, granting them an exceptional ageing potential in the cellar. The Foreau demi-secs are pure and long on the palate, destined for food and wine pairings that showcase them to even greater effect. Particular attention is paid to the development of botrytis, so that 40 to 100% of the berries are affected. The grapes are then harvested in successive tries for the Moelleux Réserve, with the richest try destined to produce the exceptional cuvée Goutte d'Or, which has only been produced on four occasions: in 1947, 1990, 2011 and 2015. The merely golden berries are destined for the classic Vouvray moelleux. The slow fermentations are driven solely by indigenous yeasts, and the gentle ageing takes place without new oak, leaving room for the vintage effect — meaning that each year is differentiated according to the climatic profile of the vintage. On tasting, the wines are frank and beautifully balanced, with indulgent and particularly long finishes. The complexity that the moelleux wines can deliver is magnificent, accompanied by the delicate tension and vivacity of the Chenin grape variety, here at its finest. One need only taste wines from magical vintages such as 1947 to be convinced that such bottles can only be exceptional, and thus deserve their place in the pantheon of the great wines of Vouvray.
