History of Domaine Thierry Glantenay

The Glantenay family has grown vines in Volnay for more than four centuries, making it one of the village’s oldest winemaking families. Located at 3 rue de Vaut, on the road climbing toward the top of the slope, the estate long remained in the shadow of the major houses, selling most of its harvest to négociants. Bernard Glantenay gradually expanded estate bottling and built a reputation as a traditional winemaker who valued freshness and balance over power.

The turning point came in 2005, when Thierry Glantenay returned to the family estate to succeed Bernard. He took charge of the entire vineyard and became closely involved in winemaking. Under his direction, the entire production is now bottled at the estate, soil management has been rethought, sorting has become rigorous and aging has gained finesse. Within a few vintages, the wines went from a reliable local find to a sought-after benchmark: the estate is regularly cited among Volnay’s finest producers, in a village that has become one of the most exciting on the entire Côte. Wine lovers praise their refined elegance, aromatic precision and impressive aging potential, as shown by vintages from the 1980s that remain vibrant today.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Thierry Glantenay

The heart of the vineyard lies in Volnay, on lean, stony clay-limestone soils facing east-southeast that give Pinot Noir its legendary delicacy. Sheltered from westerly winds and rarely affected by freezing fog, the slope enjoys a temperate climate with continental tendencies. Autumn frosts are rare, allowing for later harvesting at full ripeness. The estate owns the largest share of the Les Brouillards premier cru—just over a hectare of vines averaging around sixty years old—as well as parcels in Les Santenots, the prestigious Clos des Chênes and the exceptionally scarce Les Caillerets, just four ouvrées neighboring Clos des 60 Ouvrées.

The vineyard also extends into Pommard, with village-level vines and parcels in the premiers crus Les Saussilles and Les Rugiens—the latter more than eighty years old—as well as Les Riottes. In Puligny-Montrachet, a Chardonnay parcel in the premier cru Les Folatières rounds out the holdings and supplies the range’s only white wine. The very high average age of the vines is one of the foundations of quality. Thierry Glantenay manages the entire estate according to organic farming principles, without claiming certification. He practices light plowing, Guyot-Poussard pruning that respects sap flow, and high, manual trimming to limit compression of the foliage.

Winemaking at Domaine Thierry Glantenay

The grapes are harvested entirely by hand into small 10- to 15-kilogram crates to preserve the integrity of the berries. On arrival, they pass over a conventional sorting table and then a vibrating table, with two successive rounds of sorting by an experienced team. The clusters are then cooled before being placed in vats, allowing for cold pre-fermentation maceration and gentle extraction of aromas and color.

Most of the harvest is destemmed, but depending on the vintage Thierry Glantenay retains a proportion of whole clusters, sometimes as much as 30% or more for Les Caillerets and Clos des Chênes, to add dimension and tension. Fermentation begins with native yeasts alone; punch-downs are rare and pump-overs gentle, with the aim of achieving silky tannins without hardening the wine’s texture. Aging takes place in oak barrels for twelve to eighteen months, depending on the wine’s classification, with a deliberately restrained proportion of new oak. The wines are bottled at the estate with minimal intervention, giving them the fine texture, characteristic salinity and aging potential that define the house style.

The Wines of Domaine Thierry Glantenay

Bourgogne Pinot Noir opens the range with a classic red-fruit nose and a rounded palate, offering crisp fruit and tannins that are present yet fully integrated. Often mistaken for a young Pommard in blind tastings, it makes a remarkable introduction to the estate’s style. Volnay Vieilles Vignes is the house’s emblematic village cuvée: it includes 20 to 25% declassified premier cru fruit from the En l’Ormeau and Dessus des Lurets climats, lending it unusual depth and complexity for this appellation level, with cherry, violet and a saline finish.

Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards is the estate’s signature wine; it owns the largest share of this climat, which is rarely bottled on its own. Concentrated, almost masculine, it captivates with silky black fruit, a rounded palate and a line of saline freshness that makes it especially appealing. From the lower part of the climat below Clos des Santenots, Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots offers a striking floral profile, a supple palate and remarkable length, emphasizing definition rather than richness. According to the winemaker himself, it is one of Volnay’s greatest terroirs.

Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is the rarest bottle in the collection, sometimes produced in a quantity of just one or two barrels. From a few ouvrées neighboring Clos des 60 Ouvrées, this cuvée develops a floral perfume of breathtaking purity, a finely structured, architectural character and tannins that quite literally melt on the palate. Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes comes from a parcel in the heart of the appellation near the vines of Lafon and Château de Meursault, combining eighty-year-old vines with more recent plantings. More powerful and denser than its neighbors, it is a generously proportioned wine with layered flavors, a core of freshness and the ability to age for twenty years or more.

In Pommard, the village-level Pommard reveals a texture of unexpected finesse for the appellation, with fragrant fruit and an elegance that contrasts with the rusticity sometimes associated with its wines. Pommard 1er Cru Les Saussilles brings structure and substance, with black fruit, licorice and spice, and a firm tannic framework that calls for a few years in the cellar. From vines more than eighty years old, Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is the estate’s pinnacle in Pommard: spicy complexity, a texture somewhere between silk and velvet, and a broad finish of remarkable persistence. Pommard Les Riottes, a little-known cuvée whose vines have since been replanted, remains a rarity much sought after by collectors in the vintages still available.

Finally, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is the estate’s only white and one of its finest achievements. From one of the appellation’s most renowned premiers crus, this Chardonnay combines a lively opening with aromas of white flowers, citrus and fresh almond, a full, mineral palate and a long, chalky finish. It has the potential to age for ten to fifteen years.
