Estate History

The Thierry Glantenay estate is rooted in Volnay's winemaking history for several generations. Founded by the Glantenay family, it came into being through the passion passed down from father to son for Burgundian viticulture. Thierry Glantenay himself embodies tradition and family commitment, perpetuating centuries-old expertise in the production of quality wines in Volnay.

Vineyard and Terroir

The estate owns vines distributed across Volnay's prestigious terroirs, where clay-limestone soils offer ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, the region's emblematic grape variety. These vines, cultivated with care and according to environmentally respectful practices, benefit from Volnay's unique microclimate, which gives the grapes a distinctive expression and great aromatic finesse.

Estate Cuvées

The Thierry Glantenay estate offers a range of cuvées that faithfully reflect Volnay's exceptional terroir and the Glantenay family's artisanal expertise. Among its flagship cuvées are Volnay villages, Volnay 1er Cru, and Volnay Santenots, each elegantly expressing the characteristics specific to their respective terroirs. The estate's wines are distinguished by their balance, complexity, and ability to age gracefully, honoring the prestigious reputation of Volnay wines.

Volnay Appellation

This Burgundy village between Pommard and Meursault produces on 213 ha red wines made from Pinot Noir, renowned for their delicacy and among the finest of the Côte de Beaune. Half of the vineyard area is premier cru, including Volnay 1er Cru Le Cailleret, Volnay 1er Cru Champans, Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs, Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiet... and the climat Les Santenots, produced in Meursault, bears the Volnay Santenots appellation. Discover the main characteristics of this magnificent appellation!

Volnay wines are celebrated for their elegance and refinement. They often present a delicate ruby red color in the glass. On the nose, aromas of red fruits such as cherry and raspberry are common, accompanied by floral and sometimes spicy notes. On the palate, the wines are distinguished by a harmonious balance between fruit, acidity, and silky tannins, resulting in wines that are accessible in their youth but also capable of aging gracefully.

Volnay, an emblematic village of the Côte de Beaune, produces elegant and refined red wines, characterized by aromatic finesse, delicate structure, and the ability to age gracefully.

Color: Volnay wines present a delicate ruby-colored robe, sometimes evolving toward more garnet nuances with aging. The transparency of the color reflects the purity of the fruit and allows one to appreciate the subtleties of the hue.

Nose: On the olfactory level, Volnay wines offer a complex and captivating bouquet. Aromas of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, often dominate, underscored by delicate floral notes. One can also perceive spicy and sometimes woody nuances, reflecting aging in oak barrels.

Palate: On the palate, Volnay wines are distinguished by their elegance and balance. The texture is often silky, with delicate tannins that provide a sensation of finesse. The combination of lively acidity and light structure gives the wines characteristic freshness. Persistent red fruit flavors, accompanied by subtle mineral notes, contribute to a harmonious tasting experience.

Finesse and Grace: Volnay wines are renowned for their finesse and grace, expressing the delicacy of Pinot Noir in this privileged region.

Accessibility in Youth: The wines are often enjoyable from their youth, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy their elegance without waiting for long aging periods.

Aging Potential: Although delicious when young, Volnay wines have significant aging potential. Over time, they gain in complexity, developing deeper aromas and a more velvety texture.

Wines from specific crus in Volnay, such as the Premiers Crus, often demonstrate superior aromatic intensity and a more robust structure. Sites such as Clos des Chênes, Santenots, and Taillepieds are prized for their unique characteristics.
