Perched on the heights of Volnay, Domaine Thierry Glantenay, also known as Domaine Bernard et Thierry Glantenay, is one of the best-kept secrets of the Côte de Beaune. Across a family estate of approximately 7.5 hectares, spread across Volnay, Pommard, and Puligny-Montrachet, Thierry Glantenay crafts Pinot Noirs of remarkable finesse and aromatic precision, celebrated by international critics as among the finest of the appellation. Old vines, hand harvesting, viticulture guided by organic principles, and very gentle vinification: everything here works toward the transparency of the terroir.

Estate history

The Thierry Glantenay estate is deeply rooted in the winemaking history of Volnay, spanning several generations. Founded by the Glantenay family, it came to life through the passion passed down from father to son for Burgundian viticulture. Thierry Glantenay himself embodies the family tradition and commitment, perpetuating centuries-old expertise in the production of quality wines in Volnay.

Vine and Terroir

The estate owns vines spread across the prestigious terroirs of Volnay, where clay-limestone soils offer ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, the emblematic grape variety of the region. These vines, carefully cultivated according to environmentally respectful practices, benefit from the unique microclimate of Volnay, which imparts a distinctive expression and great aromatic finesse to the grapes.

Estate cuvées

The Thierry Glantenay estate offers a range of cuvées that faithfully reflect the exceptional terroir of Volnay and the artisanal expertise of the Glantenay family. Among its flagship cuvées, one finds Volnay villages, Volnay 1er Cru as well as Volnay Santenots, each elegantly expressing the characteristics particular to their respective terroirs. The estate's wines stand out for their balance, their complexity and their ability to age gracefully, doing justice to the prestigious reputation of Volnay wines.

Volnay Appellation

This village of Burgundy between Pommard and Meursault produces across 213 ha red wines made from Pinot Noir, celebrated for their delicacy and among the finest of the Côte de Beaune. Half of the vineyard area is premier cru, including Volnay 1er Cru Le Cailleret, Volnay 1er Cru Champans, Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs, Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiet … and the Les Santenots climat, produced in Meursault, bears the Volnay Santenots appellation. Discover the main characteristics of this magnificent appellation!

Volnay wines are celebrated for their elegance and refinement. They often display a delicate ruby-red color in the glass. On the nose, aromas of red fruits such as cherry and raspberry are common, accompanied by floral and sometimes spiced notes. On the palate, the wines stand out for a harmonious balance between fruit, acidity and silky tannins, resulting in wines that are accessible in their youth yet equally capable of aging gracefully.

Volnay, an emblematic village of the Côte de Beaune, produces elegant and refined red wines, characterized by aromatic finesse, a delicate structure and an ability to age gracefully.

Color: Volnay wines display a delicate ruby-colored robe, sometimes evolving toward deeper garnet hues with aging. The transparency of the color bears witness to the purity of the fruit and allows one to appreciate the subtleties of the color.

Nose: On the nose, Volnay wines offer a complex and captivating bouquet. Aromas of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, often dominate, underlined by delicate floral notes. Spiced and sometimes woody nuances can also be perceived, reflecting the aging in oak barrels.

Palate: On the palate, Volnay wines stand out for their elegance and balance. The texture is often silky, with delicate tannins that impart a sense of finesse. The combination of lively acidity and a light structure gives the wines a characteristic freshness. Persistent red fruit flavors, accompanied by subtle mineral notes, contribute to a harmonious tasting experience.

Finesse and Grace: Volnay wines are renowned for their finesse and grace, expressing the delicacy of Pinot Noir in this privileged region.

Accessibility in Youth: The wines are often enjoyable from an early age, allowing enthusiasts to appreciate their elegance without waiting for long aging periods.

Aging Potential: Although delicious when young, Volnay wines have significant aging potential. With time, they gain in complexity, developing deeper aromas and a more velvety texture.

Wines from specific crus in Volnay, such as the Premiers Crus, often demonstrate superior aromatic intensity and a more robust structure. Sites such as Clos des Chênes, Santenots and Taillepieds are prized for their unique characteristics.
