A reference estate in Vosne-Romanée
At the heart of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Gérard Mugneret embodies Burgundian excellence, producing some of the most refined and expressive Pinot Noirs of the Côte de Nuits. This family estate, today under the meticulous direction of Pascal Mugneret, exemplifies the perfect marriage between traditional Burgundian wisdom and progressive viticultural practices. From their prestigious Echezeaux Grand Cru to their carefully crafted Bourgogne Pinot Noir, every wine in their range reflects the estate's unwavering commitment to expressing the pure essence of their exceptional terroirs.
The history of Domaine Gérard Mugneret begins in the late 19th century when Eugène Mugneret, alongside his son René, laid the foundations of what would become one of the most respected wine estates in Vosne-Romanée. While Eugène acquired the first parcels, it was René who truly established the estate's viticultural legacy, particularly after his return from five years of captivity during the war, where he had been assigned to a farm in Czechoslovakia.
René Mugneret was a pioneer in his approach to wine marketing, being among the first in the village to develop direct relationships with customers, even welcoming clients for Sunday lunch after mass. His marriage to Lucienne gave birth to three children: Jean (1938-2010), Jacqueline (1946) and Gérard (1948). Although Jean pursued a career in the Air Force, it was Gérard who, despite an initial inclination for electricity, took over the family torch.
The estate enters a new era under Gérard's leadership in 1973, although some wines continue to bear René's labels until 1986. With his wife Françoise, Gérard brings additional refinement to the wines, developing a softer and more generous style while maintaining the estate's reputation for excellence. Their partnership proves particularly fruitful in expanding direct-to-consumer sales, which will represent over 70% of the estate's business.
The current chapter of the estate's history begins in 2005 when Pascal Mugneret, after a career in industry and specialized training at CFPPA de Beaune, takes the reins. Despite an initial "return out of curiosity", Pascal's leadership is marked by passion and innovation, particularly in his adoption of sustainable viticulture and minimalist winemaking.
Today, Domaine Gérard Mugneret spans 7.06 hectares of exceptional Burgundian terroir, primarily planted with Pinot Noir with some Gamay parcels. The estate's holdings extend across several prestigious appellations, including the coveted Echezeaux Grand Cru and premiers crus in Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Under Pascal's leadership, the estate has adopted organic and biodynamic practices (although not certified) since 2011. His approach to viticulture is notably progressive, including:
Minimal soil intervention
The use of cover crops for natural soil health
The integration of plant-based treatments and whey to reduce sulfur usage
The maintenance of high hedges (1.7 meters)
The preservation of apical buds
The creation of a private conservatory for future massal selections
The estate's commitment to maintaining genetic diversity is particularly noteworthy. Rather than replanting entire parcels, they favor complantation (individual vine replacement), and have undertaken an extensive massal selection program for a decade. This dedication to preserving old vines and genetic diversity culminated with the establishment of their private conservatory in April 2020.
The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Gérard Mugneret embraces both tradition and innovation, with Pascal having implemented several significant changes since taking over the management:
Harvest and Fermentation:
Use of whole cluster varying from 20 to 100% depending on the vintage and cuvée
Fermentations with indigenous yeasts without yeast addition
Minimal intervention during fermentation (3-4 punchdowns in total)
Precise timing of operations according to lunar and planetary cycles
Aging:
12-18 months in oak barrels
Thoughtful use of new oak (10-100% depending on the cuvée)
Minimal sulfur dioxide additions:
No additions during vinification
First addition typically in spring with rising cellar temperatures
Total SO2 at bottling maintained at a remarkable 15-20 ppm
This winemaking approach, while technically "natural", focuses on producing wines of precision and terroir expression rather than following any dogma.
Echezeaux Grand Cru: The jewel of the estate, characterized by controlled power, density and the complexity typical of Grands Crus. Combines the best qualities of Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Boudots and Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots, with additional complexity and length.
