History of Domaine Yves Cuilleron

The story begins in 1920, when Yves’s grandfather Claude Cuilleron established the family estate in Verlieu, in the village of Chavanay in the Loire department. His son Antoine took over in the early 1960s and acquired important parcels, notably in Condrieu, an appellation then almost abandoned because its slopes were so difficult to work. Yves initially planned a career in mechanical engineering. It was during his military service, through contact with winemakers, that he decided to change course. He trained in viticulture and enology, then took over the property in 1987, when it comprised just 3.5 hectares.

What followed was a long series of patient acquisitions and the reclamation of abandoned hillsides. Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, and Saint-Joseph, followed by Saint-Péray, Cornas, and Crozes-Hermitage, gradually expanded the vineyard to around 60 hectares, then 70. In 1996, Yves Cuilleron joined Pierre Gaillard and François Villard to create Les Vins de Vienne and revive the ancient Seyssuel vineyards, planted in Roman times but lost in the 20th century. In 2015, a new winery allowed him to increase the number of separate vinifications and launch a range of single-site selections named after their vineyard sites. Today, the estate ranks among the producers most consistently praised by French and international critics, with a range of rare breadth in the Northern Rhône.

Terroirs and vineyards of Domaine Yves Cuilleron

The vineyards stretch across steep hillsides on the Rhône’s right bank, on terraces supported by dry-stone walls, with slopes often exceeding 60% and elevations ranging from 150 to 325 meters. In Côte-Rôtie (around 9 hectares), the Côte Blonde’s pale gneiss favors supple wines, while the Côte Brune’s iron-rich schist yields more powerful ones. In Condrieu (around 15 hectares), the distinction is geological: the muscovite-bearing granites of Chavanay produce taut, floral Viognier, while the biotite-bearing granites of Condrieu, Vérin, and Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône produce richer, smoother wines.

The estate also has around 28 hectares in Saint-Joseph (21 for red wine and 7 for white), 4 hectares in Saint-Péray, 2 hectares in Cornas, and 8 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage, on the left bank. Its red wines are made from Syrah, while Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne make up the whites, alongside a few old Rhône grape varieties preserved for small-production cuvées. Vineyard management is meticulous, though uncertified: no insecticides, organic fertilizers, soil cultivation, leaf removal, and green harvesting to improve airflow around the clusters and control yields—all without the possibility of mechanization on the terraces.

Winemaking at Domaine Yves Cuilleron

Winemaking is entirely parcel-specific: grapes from old vines are kept separate from those of young vines, and each named vineyard site is vinified on its own, giving the estate an exceptionally wide range of cuvées. For the whites, the grapes are gently pressed and the juice is settled for around twenty-four hours. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation then take place directly in barrels. The wines age on their lees for around nine months with regular stirring before light filtration and bottling.

For the reds, the hand-picked grapes are partially destemmed according to the vintage, then fermented in open-top vats for around three weeks, with regular punch-downs and pump-overs and restrained extraction. The wines then age for eighteen months in barrels, with the proportion of new oak tailored to each cuvée. They are not filtered but are fined with egg whites before bottling. This customized approach, in which each lot receives the treatment that suits it, accounts for the wines’ precision and their clear expression of the estate’s terroirs.

The cuvées of Domaine Yves Cuilleron

Côte-Rôtie Bassenon: a blend of parcels on the Côte Blonde, with around 10% interplanted Viognier. This wine emphasizes finesse and fragrance, with violet, red fruit, blond tobacco, and silky tannins. Elegant and refined, it is best enjoyed after five to eight years.

Côte-Rôtie Madinière: from the Côte Brune and its iron-oxide-rich schist, with just 3% Viognier. Darker, more structured, and more mineral than Bassenon, it develops notes of black fruit, olive, graphite, and spice. A wine built for aging that gains considerably after eight to ten years.

Côte-Rôtie Bonnivières: a single-site selection from a named vineyard in Ampuis, made entirely from Syrah. Formerly sold as Terres Sombres, it is one of the estate’s most sought-after cuvées: dense, deep, and smoky, with firm tannins and a long, saline finish.

Côte-Rôtie Viallière: another single-site selection from Ampuis, near the hamlet of Vernay, made from 100% Syrah. This historic vineyard site produces a precise, focused wine marked by schist-derived minerality and exceptionally pure black fruit. Limited production, with aging potential of fifteen years or more.

Condrieu La Petite Côte: a blend of Chavanay parcels planted on muscovite-bearing granite, made entirely from Viognier. An intense nose of fresh apricot, quince, white flowers, and violet leads to a generous yet fresh palate and a long finish. An energetic Condrieu that is approachable in its youth.

Condrieu Les Chaillets: from old vines in Condrieu, Vérin, and Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, planted on biotite-bearing granite. Richer and more opulent, it unfolds with ripe pineapple, honeyed flowers, candied fruit, and a deeply creamy texture. One of the appellation’s benchmark Condrieu wines; give it three to five years.

Condrieu Verlieu: a single-site selection from the vineyard of the same name in Chavanay, on muscovite-bearing granite. The wine stands out for its tension, salinity, and character that is more floral than fruity, with remarkable mineral length. A precise expression of Viognier terroir.

Condrieu Vernon: from a legendary vineyard site in Condrieu, on biotite-bearing granite, that produced the cuvée formerly called Vertige. It is the pinnacle of the dry-white range: power, density, aromatic complexity, and immense persistence, with unusual aging potential for a Condrieu.

Condrieu Essence d’Automne: a sweet Viognier wine made only in suitable vintages, from overripe grapes picked in successive passes. Quince, honey, candied pear, and sweet spices are balanced by vibrant acidity. Superb with blue cheese and foie gras.

Saint-Joseph Les Pierres Sèches: 100% Syrah blended from parcels in the north of the appellation, named in tribute to the dry-stone walls supporting its terraces. Vibrant black fruit, pepper, and violet lead into a generous, supple palate. An ideal introduction to the estate’s red wines.

Saint-Joseph Cavanos: a blend of parcels in Chavanay, the appellation’s northernmost village. Denser and more mineral, this Syrah combines blackcurrant, licorice, and smoky notes with well-defined tannins. Give it three to five years.

Saint-Joseph Les Serines: the estate’s flagship red cuvée, drawn from its best parcels and oldest vines, propagated through massal selection of Serine, the old local Syrah. Concentrated, deep, and spicy, it offers fine tannins and an exceptionally long finish, with aging potential of ten to fifteen years.

Saint-Joseph Lyseras: a white made from equal parts Roussanne and Marsanne, sourced from parcels in the north of the appellation. An expressive nose of ripe yellow fruit, citrus, and honey leads to a palate that is both generous and fresh. A food-friendly white at a very approachable price.

Saint-Joseph Lombard: 100% old-vine Marsanne, fuller and more textured, with notes of almond, ripe white fruit, and brioche from aging. Its appealing, refined bitterness on the finish lends it a distinctly Rhône character and surprising aging potential.

Saint-Joseph Lieu-dit Digue: a single-site selection from Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf, made from 100% Roussanne and formerly sold as Saint-Pierre. Floral, saline, and remarkably taut, it offers a rare expression of this grape on its own in the Northern Rhône.

Cornas Le Village: 100% Syrah blended from three named vineyard sites—Les Côtes, Reynard, and Cayret—on the village’s granite soils. Dark and powerful, with black fruit, iodine, and spice over a mineral backbone typical of Cornas. It will age well for around ten years.

Cornas Lieu-dit Les Côtes: a selection from a parcel in the south of the village planted in 1911, one of the estate’s oldest. Concentration, density, and depth define this small-production Cornas, austere in its youth but sumptuous after ten years in the cellar.

Saint-Péray Les Potiers: an equal blend of Marsanne and Roussanne from the granite slopes of the Northern Rhône’s southernmost appellation. White flowers, pear, citrus, and appealing mineral tension make for a fresh white that shines at the table.

Saint-Péray Lieu-dit Biousse: 100% Marsanne from a named vineyard site in the south of the village, vinified and aged with precision. Denser and richer than Les Potiers, it combines roundness with yellow-fruit and hazelnut aromas and a lingering saline finish.

Crozes-Hermitage Laya: 100% Syrah blended from parcels in Mercurol and Beaumont-Monteux, on the left bank. Bright fruit, a supple, easy-drinking palate, and mellow tannins make this a red for immediate enjoyment at excellent value.

Crozes-Hermitage Lieu-dit Les Chassis: a single-site selection from Mercurol’s celebrated rounded-pebble soils, made from 100% Syrah. Deeper and spicier, it offers body, a rounded texture, and a peppery finish, with aging potential of eight to ten years.

Crozes-Hermitage Les Rousses: a 100% Marsanne white from the Malfondières vineyard site in the south of the appellation. Full and smooth, with notes of apricot, acacia, and fresh almond, it retains welcome freshness on the finish.

Les Vignes d’à Côté: the estate’s range of varietal wines, classified as IGP Collines Rhodaniennes or Vin de France, from vines close to the major appellations on granite and alluvial soils. It includes a generous, peppery Syrah; a floral, fruity Viognier; a taut, creamy Marsanne; a Roussanne with notes of white flowers and honey; and a vibrant Gamay. Vinified with the same care as the appellation wines, these bottles are made for immediate enjoyment at reasonable prices.

Les Cuvées Bourasseau: small-production cuvées made only in exceptional vintages and in very limited quantities, through meticulous work with the best parcels and old Rhône grape varieties such as Serine, Durif, Dureza, Persane, and Chatus. Their labels change with each vintage and are created in collaboration with local artist Robert Bourasseau, for whom they are named. Rare bottles, highly sought after by collectors.
