Domaine Yves Cuilleron, an icon of the Northern Rhône Valley (Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Condrieu)
Established in the hamlet of Verlieu, in Chavanay, Domaine Yves Cuilleron is one of the great names of the Northern Rhône Valley. Starting from 3.5 hectares in 1987, Yves Cuilleron has built a vineyard of approximately 70 hectares spread across six prestigious appellations: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Saint-Péray and Crozes-Hermitage. His trademark can be summed up in two words: haute couture viticulture and parcel-by-parcel vinification, with cuvées systematically separating old vines, young vines and individual lieu-dits. The result is deep and aromatic Syrahs, some of the world's most sought-after Condrieu Viogniers, and a range spanning from accessible single-varietal wines to exclusive single-parcel selections.
Yves Cuilleron is today one of the most important winemakers in the Northern Rhône Valley, with 50 hectares across various appellations: Condrieu (5 ha), Saint Péray (2 ha), Saint-Joseph (18 ha in red and 5 ha in white), Côte-Rôtie (6 ha), as well as Cornas and a production of Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes over 12 ha. With a presence across many terroirs and a masterful command of Syrah for red wines and Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier for whites, Yves Cuilleron has built his reputation as a great winemaker, offering more than ten different cuvées. Acclaimed for his single-vineyard selections such as Cuilleron Saint Joseph Les Serines, Cuilleron Côtes Rôties Bassenon and Terres Sombres, Cuilleron Condrieu Les Chaillets and Ayguets, Yves Cuilleron also shines with wines of a highly refined style and an unforgettable quality-to-price ratio, such as his IGP Collines Rhodaniennes wines Ripa Sinistra, Candives and Les Vignes d'à Côté. Since 2015, the lieu-dit names have replaced the commercial names previously used: la Digue replaces Saint-Pierre and Bonnivières replaces Terres Sombres, for example.
Yves Cuilleron's philosophy is simple: "producing the finest grapes possible" by observing each vine throughout the year. He does not rule out any essential treatment, while keeping interventions to a strict minimum. Yves Cuilleron respects the ancestral practices of the Northern Rhône Valley, notably through green harvesting and regular leaf removal to promote aeration and thereby minimise susceptibility to disease. He of course carries out his harvests by hand and vinifies all his wines using indigenous yeasts, without the addition of oenological products. What interests him is not making a perfect wine but offering a terroir wine that reflects the vintage and the typicity of the soil. The wines of the Yves Cuilleron estate tend toward a charming style, combining both ageing potential and accessibility in their youth. The best recent vintages are 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2015. The dynamism of this winemaker and the talented Pierre Gaillard and François Villard led them early on to great achievements, with the creation in 1996 of the Vins de Vienne, a revival of the Seyssuel hillsides north of Vienne. These hillsides had been forgotten after the Phylloxera crisis, even though they belong to the same massif of gneiss and schist as Côte Rôtie — a section of the Massif Central cut through by the Rhône, much like Ermitage and Saint Vallier in Crozes-Hermitage. They gave birth to iconic cuvées such as Sotanum in 1998, Taburum in 2000 and Heluicum in 2004, and thanks to their conviction, around fifteen producers can now be found on the Seyssuel hillsides, including Louis Chèze, Stéphane Ogier and M. Chapoutier…
