The 1954 vintage in France proved to be a contrasted one, with varying fortunes depending on the region. In Bordeaux, it was a genuine disaster: a cold, rainy spring delayed budburst, while a wet summer encouraged mildew and coulure, resulting in light, diluted and unstructured red wines, often overlooked between the brilliant 1953 and 1955. The Sauternes suffered from a lack of botrytis due to a rotten September, making production rare and uneven. In Burgundy, fortune smiled: a hot, dry summer followed by a mild and sunny autumn allowed for an ideal late harvest, producing frank, aromatic reds with elegant tannins and exceptional ageing potential, such as Romanée-Conti. The white Burgundies, fruity and lively, remain correct but occasionally a touch green. In the Rhône Valley, abundant rainfall produced wines lacking depth, light for the reds and acidic for the whites. Overall, this vintage was marked by the variable resilience of its terroirs.
