The 1987 vintage wines are of poor quality for Bordeaux 1987 because just before the harvest, 2 weeks of rain diluted the grapes (especially the Cabernet). Consequently, the red Bordeaux wines were quite fine and elegant, but with reduced aging potential due to dilution despite the ripeness of the grapes. However, since Merlot was harvested before the rains, wines from the right bank of Bordeaux (Saint-Émilion, Pomerol) produced good results with a fruity, rich, and round profile (Château Ausone, Château Clinet). Acceptable for white Bordeaux, but mediocre in Sauternes, the 1987 vintage produced wines whose peak is likely past. In red Burgundy, the quality of the 1987 vintage was good, with structured wines of medium aging potential, some of which were excellent (Domaine Joseph Roty in Gevrey-Chambertin and Dujac in Morey-Saint-Denis). White Burgundy wines in Côte de Beaune are less successful.
A weak 1987 vintage in Champagne, as with the Rhône wines of 1987, though Côte Rôtie stands out by producing better wines. No notable successes in Loire 1987 or Alsace 1987.
Recommended if you are looking to invest in 1987 wines: in Bordeaux 1987, focus mainly on wines from the Right Bank (Pomerol, St Emilion) or on a few Pessac Léognan (Haut-Brion and Mission Haut Brion). In Burgundy 1987 reds, you will be won over by beautiful labels such as the Grands Crus from Joseph Roty (in Gevrey-Chambertin) or Dujac (Bonnes-Mares, Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint Denis). In the Rhône 1987, the Côte Rôtie wines of 1987 are a great success.
