History of Domaine Paul Jaboulet

Founded in 1834 by Antoine Jaboulet in Tain-l’Hermitage, Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné quickly prospered under the leadership of his sons, Paul and Henry. This family estate became a major force in Northern Rhône winemaking thanks to its exceptional terroir and distinctive expertise. In 1919, the estate acquired the Saint-Christophe chapel at the summit of the Hermitage hill, a symbolic site that gave the celebrated "La Chapelle" cuvée its name.

Over the decades, the estate established itself as one of the region’s leaders, producing legendary vintages such as the iconic 1961 Hermitage La Chapelle. In 2006, the Frey family took over the estate, beginning a transition toward more environmentally conscious viticulture with the introduction of organic and biodynamic practices. Caroline Frey, a talented winemaker, plays a key role in this transformation, modernizing methods while preserving the estate’s soul.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Paul Jaboulet

Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné has one of the most impressive vineyard holdings in the Rhône Valley. Its vineyards cover approximately 125 hectares, including 25 hectares on the prestigious Hermitage hill. These plots lie in renowned sites such as Le Méal, Les Greffieux, Les Dionnières, Les Roucoules, and Les Bessards. These extensive holdings allow the estate to grow a range of grape varieties, chiefly Syrah for its reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for its whites.

The Hermitage terroir is distinguished by its granite soils, ideal for Syrah, and its unique microclimate, which helps the grapes ripen fully. Through biodynamic farming, the winery works to preserve the natural balance of the soils and encourage biodiversity. Meticulous work in the vineyard allows each cuvée to express the full richness and distinctive character of its terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Paul Jaboulet

Winemaking at Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné is an exercise in precision and skill. The grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted in the vineyard, then carefully selected again at the winery using both optical and manual sorting tables. This attention to detail ensures that only the best berries are retained for the prestigious cuvées.

The red wines are made using traditional methods, with 100% of the grapes destemmed. Maceration lasts about three weeks, with daily pump-overs to extract as much color and aroma as possible. The wines then undergo malolactic fermentation before aging for 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels, demi-muids, truncated-cone vats, or even concrete eggs, depending on the vintage and cuvée. The proportion of new oak also varies by vintage to avoid obscuring the expression of the terroir.

The Cuvées of Domaine Paul Jaboulet

Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné is renowned for its exceptional cuvées, particularly those from the Hermitage appellation. Among them, La Chapelle is undoubtedly the most iconic. Made from Syrah, this wine is known for its depth, complexity, and exceptional aging potential. The 1961 vintage remains one of the world’s most sought-after, making La Chapelle a legend in wine history.

Maison Bleue, formerly called La Petite Chapelle, is a more accessible, lighter version of La Chapelle that still offers a fine expression of the Hermitage terroir. Made from grapes grown on the middle and lower slopes of Le Méal, this cuvée is distinguished by its fine tannins and restrained oak influence.
