Ghislaine Barthod

Wines from the Ghislaine Barthod estate

The Ghislaine Barthod estate is located in Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuit in Burgundy and has 6 ha of vines, the vast majority in the AOC Chambolle-Musigny. The average age of Ghislaine Barthod's vines is over 30 years old, and yields are always modest. Historically, this estate was created at the end of the 1920s when it was called Noëllat-Barthod. The estate was run in the 1950s by Gaston Barthod and his daughter Ghislaine, at the estate since 1986, found herself alone at the helm when her father died in 1999. It should be noted that the 2018 vintage was vinified by Clément Barthod, Ghislaine's son. Despite its small size, the Ghislaine Barthod estate is focused on the AOC Chambolle-Musigny, since in addition to the Village cuvée, it has no less than 9 Premiers Crus in Chambolle (of which there exist 24). The estate's range of wines include the following 1er crus of Chambolle-Musigny: Les Baudes, Aux Beaux Bruns, Les Charmes, Les Châtelots, Aux Combottes, Les Cras, Les Véroilles, Les Fuées and finally Les Gruenchers.

The Chambolle-Musigny 1ers Cru Les Fuées, Cras, Baudes and Veroilles surround the Grand Cru Les Bonnes Mares, and provide a glimpse of the race and density of the Grand Cru they surround. The Premiers Crus les Charmes and les Châtelots are located in the center of the Chambolle vineyard. Les Charmes is a seductive 1er cru which seems to contain many of the tell-tale aspects of Chambolle within itself. At Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, the grapes are partially destemmed, and only natural yeasts are used. Aging is not too long and can last close to 20 months, with a proportion of 20 to 25% new oak. The different Chambolle-Musigny crus from the Ghislaine Barthod estate have strong personalities, and after a few years of aging (from 7 to 12 years), these great Pinot Noirs reveal a floral and spicy bouquet, and offer a refined and complex mouthfeel. Under the direction of Ghislaine, the estate's reputation has developed internationally, so much so, the Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is considered one of the most qualitative and representative estates of the great wines of Chambolle-Musigny. The modest size of the vineyards and the high demand from amateurs contributes to the scarcity of bottles.
