The TOP winemakers of Rhône

The estate has a vineyard of 5 ha (4.8 ha in Rhône red — 80% grenache noir, 20% mourvèdre) and 0.2 ha in Rhône white (95% clairette and 5% grenache blanc). The whole is divided into 6 plots, all located on the Route d'Orange in the quartiers of Palastor, Bois Dauphin and Cabrière. A former Michelin-starred chef, Jérôme Gradassi turned to winemaking in 2004, following the takeover of his grandfather's domaine de 3 ha of vines. Since then, he has been running his own estate entirely on his own, with the utmost care, and opts for a traditional approach: grapes that are minimally or not destemmed, vinified without artifice, and aged in used barrels (no new oak). The "so-called cold" soils farmed by the estate are not susceptible to drought and produce elegant wines, leaning more toward finesse than power, with abundant garrigue aromas. Domaine Jérôme Gradassi produces a small output: a single cuvée in each colour, amounting to approximately 10,000 bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge and 800 bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc. Jérôme Gradassi uses no fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides — only sulphur, and in moderation. Soil work is traditional, and harvesting is done by hand in crates. In the cellar, grapes are vinified as whole bunches in tiled concrete vats dug into the rock, which allows a gentle natural warmth to be maintained over a long period. Vinifications are classic, on indigenous yeasts, with approximately 4 weeks of maceration and manual punch-downs. The ageing is short — 10 months in old barrels (between 4 and 10 years old). The Gradassi Châteauneuf rouge offers an expressive and very pleasant nose of black cherry, pepper, liquorice and blood orange. The palate is smooth with a very fine balance and silky tannins. It can be cellared without difficulty for 10 to 15 years. The splendid white is highly singular, with its 2 varieties of clairette (white and rosé) that bring both a singular nose and palate. It evokes the sea and shellfish, rounded out by a hint of fennel. The palate, taut on the attack, opens up into a soft and full-bodied texture. It can be enjoyed young for its fruit or left to develop for up to 10 years. Do not hesitate to discover the 2 wines from Domaine Gradassi if you are not yet familiar with their production, as the only drawback will soon lie in the difficulty of obtaining them, given the estate's very limited output.
