Hungary, the cradle of a thousand-year-old winemaking tradition inherited from Roman times, stands as an essential destination for wine enthusiasts. With 22 wine regions, the country particularly shines through Tokaj, Eger and Villány. The Tokaj region, nestled in northeastern Hungary and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is world-renowned for its Tokaji Aszú, an exceptional sweet wine made from botrytized grapes (noble rot). This treasure, crafted from grape varieties such as Furmint and Hárslevelű, captivates with its aromas of honey, candied apricot and spices, balanced by a lively acidity that ensures impressive longevity. The mineral-rich volcanic soils and humid microclimate of the Tokaj valleys foster this unique alchemy. Tokaji Aszú is distinguished by its classification in "puttonyos" (from 3 to 6), reflecting its sweetness, while Esszencia, rare and concentrated, represents the pinnacle of this tradition. Aged in historic cellars, these wines conquered royal courts, such as that of Louis XIV, who called them "wine of kings and king of wines". In Eger, Bikavér ("Bull's Blood") offers robust reds, and Villány excels with grape varieties such as Kékfrankos. Driven by a new generation of innovative winemakers, Hungarian wines, whether sweet, dry or red, are now earning well-deserved international recognition.
