Lopez de Heredia - Viña Tondonia wines: buy at the best price

At the heart of Haro, the historic capital of Rioja Alta, the estate Bodegas R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia embodies with exemplary faithfulness the great tradition of the Rioja. Founded in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, it is the oldest bodega in Haro and one of the three oldest in the entire Rioja. Still in the hands of the same family, this exceptional estate cultivates more than 170 hectares of single-vineyard plots (Viña Tondonia, Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo, Viña Gravonia) and produces white, red and rosé wines of legendary longevity, aged for decades in handcrafted American oak barrels, vinified for nearly 150 years according to the same traditional methods, with no concession to the passage of time.

History of Domaine Lopez de Heredia - Viña Tondonia

The history of Bodegas R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia begins in the mid-19th century, when French merchants, whose vineyards had been devastated by phylloxera, came to Rioja Alta in search of quality grapes to produce their wines. Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a young man passionate about viticulture, followed in their footsteps and immediately fell in love with the lands surrounding Haro, the mythical capital of Rioja Alta. Around 1877, he began designing and constructing the complex that would become the López de Heredia bodega, in the famous Barrio de la Estación, the historic railway station district that was then home to the great exporting houses of Rioja.

Don Rafael devoted his life to building an exceptional estate, driven by an absolute pursuit of excellence. He gradually acquired the finest plots, including Viña Tondonia, the emblematic vineyard nestled in a bend of the Ebro, which would become so closely identified with the estate that it would eventually lend its name to the house. Since its founding, little has changed: the estate has remained entirely family-owned, passed down from generation to generation, as have the winemaking and ageing practices, and even the in-house cooperage. Four generations later, Maria José López de Heredia continues this legacy with her brothers and sisters, with a fidelity to Rioja tradition that is as rare as it is precious, never yielding to contemporary oenological trends.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Lopez de Heredia - Viña Tondonia

A unique distinction among the great houses of Rioja, the Domaine Lopez de Heredia - Viña Tondonia purchases no grapes and cultivates only its own vines, across four emblematic plots all located in Rioja Alta: Viña Tondonia, Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo and Viña Gravonia. The Lopez de Heredia - Viña Tondonia vineyard is the jewel of the estate, a vast plot of more than 100 hectares nestled in a bend on the right bank of the Ebro, in the immediate vicinity of the bodega in Haro. Regarded by many as the most spectacular vineyard in Haro, it offers a diversity of clay-limestone soils rich in silt, which lend power and complexity to the wines.

The other vineyards, Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo and Viña Gravonia, are also planted entirely with traditional Rioja grape varieties: Tempranillo dominates for the reds (around 75%), complemented by Garnacha (Grenache, approximately 15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan) for the reds. For the whites, the grape mix is almost exclusively Viura (90%) and Malvasía (10%), emblematic traditional varieties. Vineyard management is rigorously traditional, with a preference for soil work and absolute respect for the natural cycle of the vine. Harvests are entirely manual, at optimal ripeness, and each plot is vinified separately, a hallmark of the estate's stylistic consistency across vintages.

Vinifications at Domaine Lopez de Heredia - Viña Tondonia

In the cellar, López de Heredia has for nearly one hundred and fifty years perpetuated unchanged methods, considered by many to be the purest expression of Rioja tradition. Fermentations are conducted with indigenous yeasts alone, in large century-old wooden vats that the family maintains with extreme care. The estate has its own cooperage, where master coopers repair the American oak barrels (the traditional hallmark of Rioja) each year and handcraft new ones. This total autonomy over the cellar and the production of barrels is an exceptionally rare occurrence in the world of wine.

The ageing periods are deliberately very long, far exceeding the legal minimums imposed by the DOCa Rioja. The Reservas generally spend six years in barrel, followed by a long bottle ageing — well above the DOC requirements (3 years of which 1 in cask). The Gran Reservas, produced only in the greatest vintages, are aged for up to 10 years in barrels (with manual racking twice a year) and then several more years in bottle. The wines are fined with fresh egg whites according to tradition. This philosophy produces wines of legendary finesse, complexity and longevity, with an evolved robe, developed tertiary aromas and an unmistakable aromatic signature — a floral and flavourful perfume that is the hallmark of the house.

The Cuvées of Domaine Lopez de Heredia - Viña Tondonia

Viña Tondonia Tinto Reserva: the signature cuvée and flagship of the estate, produced from the classic blend of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacha (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (5% each), all sourced from the Viña Tondonia vineyard. The wine spends approximately six years in American oak barrels, double the legal minimum, followed by a long bottle ageing before release. An evolved ruby robe tending towards amber, a complex nose of dried cherry, plum, vanilla, cedar, leather and dried tarragon, a savoury, fresh palate with a silky tannic structure and a long finish. A textbook Rioja, built to age for decades.

Viña Tondonia Tinto Gran Reserva: an exceptional cuvée produced only in the most outstanding vintages, from the finest grapes of the Viña Tondonia vineyard. Aged for 10 years in American oak barrels, with two rackings per year and fining with fresh egg whites, then several additional years in bottle. The result is a Rioja of breathtaking finesse, with an amber robe, aromas of dried flowers, undergrowth, damp earth, iodine and gentle spices, and a tannic structure of incomparable softness. A living legend of Rioja.

Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva: the emblematic Fine Wine of the house, produced from Viura (90%) and Malvasía (10%) sourced from the Viña Tondonia vineyard. Traditional vinification followed by a long ageing in American oak barrels, which imparts a controlled oxidation and a unique aromatic signature unlike anything else in the world. An evolved golden robe, a complex nose of baked apple, honey, beeswax, candied citrus peel and hazelnut, a broad, vibrant palate of astonishing freshness and length. An absolute icon among great age-worthy whites.

Viña Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva: the Gran Reserva version of the celebrated white, produced only in the greatest vintages. An even longer ageing in American oak barrels, which extends the aromatic complexity towards notes of dried fruits, honey, dried flowers and iodine. An absolute rarity, considered by enthusiasts as one of the greatest white wines in the world, capable of defying decades without losing its freshness.

Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva: a totally unique cuvée in the world, a Gran Reserva rosé produced from Garnacha (60%), Tempranillo (30%) and Viura (10%) sourced from the Viña Tondonia vineyard. Aged for approximately four years in American oak barrels, which transforms this rosé into a gastronomic wine of rare complexity. An evolved salmon robe, a nose of dried flowers, orange peel, beeswax and saline notes, a taut, deep palate with a saline finish. A vinous UFO, sought after the world over.

Viña Bosconia Reserva: another great cuvée from the estate, produced from Tempranillo (80%) sourced from the Viña Bosconia vineyard, complemented by Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. Stylistically inspired by Burgundy (the old labels even mentioned "tipo Borgoña"), it stands out for its finesse, floral elegance and silky tannic structure. An evolved ruby robe, a nose of ripe cherry, violet, leather and blond tobacco, a refined, salivating, long palate.

Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva: the Gran Reserva version of the Bosconia cuvée, produced only in the finest vintages. An extremely long ageing in American oak barrels, followed by extended bottle ageing. A rare cuvée of vertiginous aromatic complexity and exceptional longevity, expressing the full nobility of Bosconia's Tempranillo.

Viña Cubillo Crianza: an entry-level cuvée in the López de Heredia philosophy, yet one that far exceeds the usual standards. Sourced from the Viña Cubillo vineyard, it blends Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. Aged in American oak barrels for three years (already well beyond the legal minimum for a Crianza), followed by a rest in bottle. A brilliant ruby robe, a nose of red fruits, leather and tobacco, a fresh and juicy palate. An ideal introduction to the world of the estate.

Viña Gravonia Crianza: an entry-level white cuvée, produced from 100% Viura sourced from the Viña Gravonia vineyard. Aged for approximately four years in American oak barrels, which lends the wine a controlled oxidative signature. A brilliant golden robe, a complex nose of golden apple, beeswax, candied citrus and saline notes, a broad, fresh, long palate. A purist white Rioja of great purity, perfectly encapsulating the philosophy of the house.
