The wines of Clos St Jean in Châteauneuf du Pape, Northern Rhône, Rhône Valley
The CLOS ST JEAN estate was established in Châteauneuf du Pape at the very beginning of the 1900s, and it was already enjoying undeniable international success in the 1930s by exporting its wines to the United States to the finest restaurants in New York from the end of Prohibition onwards.
In 1957, Guy Maurel took over the Domaine Clos St Jean and today, his grandchildren have succeeded him. The Clos Saint-Jean vineyard spans more than 40 hectares, of which approximately 20 hectares lie on the famous Crau plateau. Only 1 hectare is dedicated to white Rhône wines, with Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. On the red Rhône side, the famous cuvée Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf Combe des Fous (red) is a tribute to Guy Maurel, who ultimately persisted in planting vines on a combe, despite the advice of many of his peers. Called a "madman" by all his neighbours, he stood by his choice, and today it is one of the estate's flagship cuvées. The reputation of Domaine Clos St Jean speaks for itself, and the wines of Clos St Jean are renowned for being quite concentrated and full-bodied, yet perfectly balanced. Yields are kept entirely under control here through techniques such as de-budding and green harvesting, making it possible to select the finest bunches, concentrate the juices and improve the quality of the vineyard. The Grenache is aged in vat in order to preserve its fruity balance and finesse. The other grape varieties are aged in barrels for one year. It is a full and generous wine that reveals its full potential with time. Clos Saint-Jean produces 5 red Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées and one white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Domaine Clos Saint Jean favours complete destemming, long macerations and ageing in one-year-old oak barrels or demi-muids. The Grenache is not aged in wood. Philippe Cambie had been the consulting oenologist since 2003, and the wines of Clos St Jean are recognised for their great complexity and power. The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced in very small quantities, and can be said to represent one of the finest whites of the appellation. The Clos St Jean Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge is concentrated and indulgent, with beautiful garrigue notes, and will improve for at least 10 years. The Clos Saint Jean Deus Ex Machina cuvée refers to the estate's spirit of innovation and adaptation — in perpetual pursuit of technical and qualitative improvements, the domaine is prepared to make substantial changes in order to achieve the best possible result. Ultimately, the "Deus ex Machina" cuvée impresses with its incredible elegance, its chocolatey indulgence and its vibrant complexity over always fleshy fruit, with notes of leather, violet, amber and vanilla. It combines concentration, depth and perfect balance (the cuvée has on several occasions been awarded the supreme critical score of 100/100). Critics and wine lovers are unanimous: the cuvées of Domaine Clos St Jean are absolutely not to be missed.
