A benchmark in Chateauneuf du Pape : Clos du Mont Olivet
Le Clos du Mont Olivet is a historic and renowned family estate in Chateauneuf du Pape, located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley, which has remained in the Sabon family since the early 20ème century. In the 1950s, the wines of Clos Mont Olivet grew significantly in popularity in France and England. Following various divisions of the estate among the Sabon sons, it was the 3 sons of Joseph Sabon — Bernard, Jean Claude and Pierre — who expanded the Domaine du Clos du Mont Olivet from 1978 onwards.
Since 2002, the new generation made up of Thierry, Céline and David has continued to manage this great 50-hectare estate located in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. David and Thierry oversee the vineyards and the cellar, while Céline is in charge of administration and commercial relations. As the Clos Mont Olivet vineyard is highly fragmented, the style of the Clos du Mont Olivet wines remains traditional, and the wines can sometimes appear reserved, even closed in their youth. Time working its magic, a beneficial ageing of 10 to 15 years can bring them finesse and brilliance, as well as revealing their full potential for subtlety and refinement. The wide range of wines from the Clos Mont Olivet estate comprises a Vin de France named "la Sabonite" (Grenache), 3 IGP du Gard wines — "La Quête": a pure cinsault, "Confluences": a blend of carignan and grenache; since 2016, "Rive Droite": a red wine composed of grenache, carignan, syrah, merlot and mourvèdre — 2 wines under the AOC Côtes du Rhône, including the white full of floral nuances, and finally 4 Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées including a spirited and generous white, yet superbly distinguished. On the CDP red side, the red Châteauneuf is of excellent quality, the cuvée being sourced from parcels yielding fine and fruity wines, thus accessible younger, and finally the celebrated Cuvée du Papet from Clos Mont Olivet, composed of very old Grenache vines (dating from 1901) plus mourvèdre and syrah, and produced only in the most favourable years. The Cuvée du Papet is very rich, and the juice therefore possesses more sap and more body to balance its power. Finally, Clos du Mont Olivet offers 3 Lirac cuvées to complete the range: 1 red Lirac and 1 rosé Lirac, plus the celebrated Marie Jausset cuvée (a tribute to the grandmother), highly concentrated, which serves as the AOC Lirac equivalent of the Cuvée du Papet in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The best vintages for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation are as follows: 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2017. All the wines display great ageing potential, and it is strongly advised, for Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, to allow them to age for approximately 10 years.
