History of Domaine André Cathiard

The history of this secretive estate begins in the 1930s, when Sylvain Cathiard's grandfather, having worked at the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and then at Lamarche, decided to establish his own vineyard in Vosne-Romanée. As was customary at the time, most of the harvest was sold to local négociants, and the family name had not yet appeared on the labels.

It was André Cathiard who took over the running of the estate in 1969 and led it until 1985. During those sixteen years, he structured the domaine, developed bottling at the property and had his name printed on the labels, sometimes complemented by the mention Cathiard-Molinier depending on the vintage. It was also under his direction, in 1972, that the domaine acquired its parcel of Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts, an immediate neighbour of the grand cru La Tâche, which would become the jewel of the house. His son Sylvain succeeded him from 1985 onwards and continued this rise, before handing over to his own son Sébastien. Bottles bearing the André Cathiard label therefore correspond to a pivotal era for the estate, now highly sought after on the market for age-worthy wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine André Cathiard

The vineyard covers approximately five hectares, fragmented into numerous small parcels spread across Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echézeaux, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny. This tiny size explains the extreme rarity of the wines and their secretive character. The vines are old, with several parcels having been planted between the 1940s and 1970s, guaranteeing naturally low yields and remarkable concentration.

The individual plots are of exceptional quality. In Vosne-Romanée, three village parcels planted in the early 1970s total 0.79 hectares, complemented by leading premier crus: 0.75 hectares of Aux Malconsorts adjoining La Tâche, 0.164 hectares of Les Suchots planted in 1969 and neighbouring the grand cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant, 0.2468 hectares of Aux Reignots situated just above La Romanée, and 0.293 hectares of En Orveaux planted in 1953 in the commune of Flagey-Echézeaux, part of this climat even falling within the grand cru Echézeaux. In Nuits-Saint-Georges, the domaine holds 0.128 hectares of village vines planted in 1949, 0.475 hectares of the premier cru Aux Murgers planted in 1945, and 0.43 hectares of Aux Thorey planted in 1953. In Chambolle-Musigny, a 0.456-hectare parcel planted in 1951 occupies the lieu-dit Le Clos de l'Orme, just to the south-east of the premier cru Les Charmes. The estate's vines are renowned throughout Burgundy for their impeccable condition, the fruit of relentless work that the family considers the absolute key to great wines.

Winemaking at Domaine André Cathiard

The cellar philosophy rests on a simple idea: everything is decided in the vineyard, and the winemaker's role is not to betray the quality of the grapes. Harvesting is done by hand, followed by rigorous sorting upon arrival at the winery. The harvest is then entirely destemmed, a deliberate choice that favours fruit purity and tannic finesse over the structure brought by the stems.

Fermentations are conducted gently, with soft extractions designed to preserve energy and aromatic definition. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels, with a traditionally significant proportion of new wood — around half for village appellations and up to 100% for the grand cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant. This share of new wood has been progressively reduced across the generations, in the conviction that more restrained ageing allows the terroir to speak more clearly. The resulting wines display remarkable youth, energy and fruit purity across the entire range, with an intensity and definition that have earned them their reputation. Silky and complex, they often seduce from an early age while offering exceptional depth and persistence in the finest cuvées.

The cuvées of Domaine André Cathiard

Bourgogne Rouge: the entry-level cuvée, vinified with the same exacting standards as the higher crus. It offers a silky, fragrant Pinot Noir with notes of cherry and raspberry, displaying a definition and purity rarely found at this appellation level. An excellent way to discover the house's signature style.

Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits: sourced from the high-altitude slopes that dominate the Côte, this more recent cuvée brings freshness and crunchy fruit. The texture is supple, the finish clean and easy-drinking, in a very approachable style.

Chambolle-Musigny « Clos de l'Orme »: a lieu-dit situated just to the south-east of the premier cru Les Charmes, planted in 1951 over 0.456 hectares. It delivers a Chambolle of great delicacy, with notes of rose, violet and small red fruits, a silky texture and a saline finish. One of the most charming expressions in the range.

Nuits-Saint-Georges: produced from a mere strip of 0.128 hectares planted in 1949, this village wine is of extreme rarity. It combines the robustness characteristic of the appellation with the house's refined winemaking touch, on a register of dark fruits and spices, with well-rounded tannins.

Vosne-Romanée: a blend of three village parcels planted in the early 1970s, totalling 0.79 hectares. This charming village wine expresses the full spiced sensuality of the terroir, with elegant red and black berries, effortless balance and a luminous fruit in the mid-palate. The vibrant acidity lends it both precision and nerve.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru « Aux Thorey »: a 0.43-hectare plot planted in 1953, located in the northern part of the appellation, on the Vosne-Romanée side. The wine is finely chiselled, marked by dark fruits and an ever-present delicacy, with an elongated mineral backbone and a fine tannic structure.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru « Aux Murgers »: 0.475 hectares of very old vines planted in 1945, on a mid-slope climat adjoining Vosne-Romanée. It produces a deep, structured Pinot Noir with firm yet fine tannins, on a register of dark fruits, leather and spice. A premier cru that benefits greatly from a few years in the cellar.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru « En Orveaux »: 0.293 hectares planted in 1953 in the commune of Flagey-Echézeaux, a particularly interesting climat given that part of it falls within the grand cru Echézeaux. The wine displays a commanding presence and remarkable density, with intense fruit and a length that places it among the greatest achievements of the estate.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru « Les Suchots »: a tiny parcel of 0.164 hectares planted in 1969, adjoining the grand cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant, from which only around three barrels are produced in a normal vintage. After the commanding presence of En Orveaux, the style of Les Suchots soars, all lightness and ethereal grace. The red fruit is vivid and pure, evoking wild strawberry, and carries through unfalteringly to the finish.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru « Aux Reignots »: 0.2468 hectares situated right in the heart of this very small premier cru, just above the grand cru La Romanée, of which the family is the second most important owner. Produced from the youngest vines on the estate, planted in 1997, it yields only five barrels in a good vintage. A wine of refined elegance, very fragrant, with a fine texture and a persistent finish.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru « Aux Malconsorts »: the estate's flagship cuvée, acquired in 1972, from 0.75 hectares neighbouring the grand cru La Tâche. On the palate, it reveals notes of cocoa, spice and cinnamon intertwined with aromas of fresh red fruits, cherry, liquorice and grilled game. The palate is ample, deep and fleshy, underpinned by a velvety tannic structure, considerable concentration and exceptional minerality. A mythical wine endowed with an immense ageing potential.

Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru: the absolute jewel of the house, from a choice parcel at the heart of this legendary grand cru in Vosne-Romanée. Aged entirely in new barrels, it unfolds unrivalled depth of flavour and persistence, blending crystalline red fruits, spices, old rose and a mineral backbone of rare nobility. Produced from just a few barrels, it ranks among the most sought-after bottles on the entire Côte de Nuits and demands many years of patience.
