History of Domaine Jean Grivot

The history of Domaine Jean Grivot begins in the Jura, where the family had been cultivating vines since the 17th century. The decisive turning point came at the end of the 18th century, when Joseph Grivot settled in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, just before the French Revolution.

It was Gaston Grivot, Joseph's son, who established the prestige of the estate. In 1919, he acquired a major parcel in the mythical Clos de Vougeot, one of the most celebrated Grand Crus of Burgundy. A visionary, he had a magnificent entrance gate erected at his vines, still visible today. A pioneer, he became one of the first qualified oenologists from the University of Dijon in the 1920s.

In the 1930s, the Grivot family distinguished itself by being among the first in Vosne-Romanée to bottle and market their own wines, breaking with the tradition of selling to négociants. This approach allowed the estate to exercise full control over its quality and to build its reputation.

Jean Grivot perpetuates the family legacy with determination. In 1984, he acquired 31 ares in the prestigious Grand Cru Richebourg, consolidating the viticultural heritage. His rigorous work has made the estate a world reference.

In 1982, Étienne Grivot joined his father and became the fifth generation to head the estate. He assumed full responsibility in 1987, alongside his wife Marielle. Inspired by the great vintages of 1929 and 1937, Étienne observed the impoverishment of the soils caused by the excessive use of fertilizers in the preceding decades. He then dedicated himself to restoring the vitality of the terroirs in order to recapture the depth of the great wines of the past.

Since 2010, Mathilde and Hubert Grivot, the sixth generation, have been working alongside their parents. Mathilde, trained in viticulture, oenology, and international business, completed internships in Bordeaux and Oregon. She brings a new energy while respecting the family philosophy. Together, this intergenerational team is steering the style of the wines toward greater depth and richness, while preserving the freshness that is characteristic of the estate.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Jean Grivot

The vineyard of Domaine Jean Grivot extends over 15 hectares divided into small parcels covering 22 appellations. This mosaic of exceptional terroirs illustrates the Burgundian adage that "what is small is beautiful." The estate owns vines in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Flagey-Échezeaux, and Chambolle-Musigny.

In Vosne-Romanée, the heart of the estate, the soils are predominantly marly-limestone enriched with red clays whose color derives from their high iron oxide content. This composition gives the wines an exceptional mineral elegance and a silky tannic structure.

The three Grand Crus form the jewels of the estate. The Clos de Vougeot (1.87 hectares) extends from the lower slopes up to the Château de la Tour, crossing several geological strata. The fifty-year-old vines benefit from a privileged position within this mythical clos created by Cistercian monks. The Richebourg (31 ares), acquired in 1984, produces wines of unparalleled depth and complexity. The Échezeaux (0.84 hectares) is located in the climat des Cruots, planted in 1954.

Among Premier Crus, the estate owns six climats in Vosne-Romanée (Les Beaux Monts, Aux Brûlées, Les Suchots, Les Rouges, Les Chaumes, Aux Reignots) and three in Nuits-Saint-Georges (Les Pruliers, Aux Boudots, Roncière). Each one expresses a different facet of its original terroir.

The average age of the vines is 45 to 50 years, with certain parcels containing vines over sixty years old. This maturity guarantees concentration and complexity. The high planting density encourages competition between vines and deep rooting, naturally producing low yields.

The estate practices viticulture with a biological approach, without official certification. Treatments favor biological solutions, organic fertilization is minimal, and no herbicides are used. The entire vineyard is ploughed, with three hectares worked using the horse Pirate to minimize soil compaction. Green harvesting and light leaf-thinning optimize ripening. This meticulous work forms the foundation of the wines' exceptional quality.

Winemaking at Domaine Jean Grivot

The winemaking philosophy rests on a fundamental principle: revealing the authentic expression of each terroir. The estate adapts its interventions to the profile of each vintage rather than applying a single formula, prioritizing the harmony between energy and suavity.

The harvest is entirely manual, carried out at the optimal moment of ripeness. Destemming at 95% almost entirely eliminates the stems in order to promote tannic finesse. After meticulous sorting, the berries undergo a cold maceration of one to two days before fermentation.

Fermentation starts naturally with indigenous yeasts, respecting the microbiological identity of each parcel. A few light punchdowns precede fermentation, but Étienne Grivot refuses any punchdown thereafter, not wishing to "mix the physical with the spiritual." Maceration lasts approximately seventeen days with gentle pump-overs once a day.

Aging takes place in French oak barrels for fifteen to eighteen months, using wood from the Allier and Nièvre forests. The proportion of new barrels varies according to the appellation: approximately 25% for village wines, 30 to 60% for Premier Crus, and 40 to 70% for Grand Crus.

After blending in the vat, bottling takes place without fining or filtration, fully preserving the aromatic richness and aging potential. The estate vinifies exclusively its own production, guaranteeing traceability and absolute quality control. Bottling even takes into account lunar cycles and barometric pressures, reflecting a holistic approach in which every detail matters.

The cuvées of Domaine Jean Grivot

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts ranks among the most prestigious climats of the appellation. This cuvée offers a magnificent, complex nose and a scintillating palate of crystalline purity, underpinned by a precise and voluptuous oak influence. The balance between power and elegance makes it a wine capable of rivaling certain Grand Crus. Aging potential: twenty to thirty years.

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Brûlées

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Brûlées takes its name from the burnt, toasted character of its due-east facing terroir. This climat produces wines of remarkable depth, with a captivating aromatic intensity blending dark fruits, gentle spices, and smoky notes. The dense texture and refined tannins promise a long evolution in the bottle.

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots, located near the border with Échezeaux, benefits from an exceptional terroir. The vines planted in 1954 give this wine an outstanding concentration and complexity. The nose reveals elegant aromas of red and black fruits, while the palate is seduced by its silky volume and its persistent finish with licorice accents.

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Chaumes expresses a warm and enveloping personality. The soft and spicy notes unfold generously, offering a rich and nuanced tasting experience that evolves beautifully with age.

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Rouges is characterized by its vivacity and mineral freshness, with fine tannins and a refreshing acidity that carry the wine toward a long, saline finish.

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Reignots completes the collection of Vosne-Romanée climats with its spicy character and elegant tannic structure.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Pruliers represents one of the finest climats of Nuits-Saint-Georges. According to tasters, this cuvée has never been so precise and expressive, carried by a tannic framework that is almost unctuous, rich, and well-integrated. Aromas of dark fruits mingle with notes of undergrowth and spices, creating a fascinating complexity. This exceptional age-worthy wine improves over twenty-five to thirty-five years.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Boudots

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Boudots, situated on the border with Vosne-Romanée, shares certain characteristics with its prestigious neighbor while retaining the virile structure typical of Nuits-Saint-Georges. This duality makes it a particularly interesting wine, combining elegance with power.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Roncière

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Roncière expresses the earthy and mineral character typical of Nuits-Saint-Georges with remarkable depth and an exceptional aging potential.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is undoubtedly the most celebrated cru in Burgundy. The Grivot parcel of 1.87 hectares, planted with fifty-year-old vines, produces an honest wine of extraordinary complexity. The soft and spicy notes unfold with majesty, offering a myriad of invigorating and nuanced flavors that evolve continuously throughout the tasting.

Échezeaux Grand Cru

Échezeaux Grand Cru embodies absolute refinement. This serene and penetrating wine is endowed with an extraordinary energy. Its imposing stature nevertheless yields to the finesse of its shimmering fruit and its licorice-tinged, juicy finish.

Richebourg Grand Cru

Richebourg Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of the estate's production. This 31-are parcel acquired in 1984 produces one of the most coveted wines in Burgundy. The aromatic complexity reaches vertiginous heights, with successive layers of dark and red fruits, precious spices, dried flowers, truffle, and undergrowth.

Since the arrival of Mathilde and Hubert in 2010, the style of the wines has evolved toward greater depth, richness, and precise ripeness, while preserving the freshness, vivacity, and aging potential that are characteristic of the estate. The cuvées now offer greater silkiness and volume, reflecting an increased precision in work both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
