Frequently Asked Questions

La Bergerie de l'Arcade is a family estate created by brothers Pascal and Gilles Soulas, a family property for several generations, where the family initially cultivated fruit trees. In 2010, under the influence of Laurent Vaillé from Domaine de la Grange des Pères, the two brothers acquired six hectares of vines on the hillsides of Aniane. Their first vintage was released in 2016 and production remains very limited. This discreet estate quickly established itself as one of the most sought-after addresses in the Languedoc.

The blend of the red wine from Bergerie de l'Arcade is composed of 35% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and 5% Carignan, on a clay-limestone soil. Each grape variety and each plot are vinified separately, before ageing for 24 months in barrels, followed by blending for 4 to 5 months prior to bottling. This meticulous plot-by-plot approach is the hallmark of the greatest estates.

Dense, balanced and finely structured, the red wine from Bergerie de l'Arcade pairs particularly well with grilled red meats, herb-roasted lamb and Languedoc cheeses. Its aromatic richness, combining ripe dark fruits, garrigue and floral notes, makes it an ideal companion for the cuisines of southern France and slow-cooked dishes with Provençal herbs.

The vines are located more precisely in the village of Pouzols, in the lieu-dit "Les Pradels", covering two hectares. This clay-limestone terroir of the Terrasses du Larzac offers ideal geoclimatic conditions for the expression of noble Mediterranean grape varieties, and the privileged geographical location, not far from the mythical Grange des Pères, gives this wine a unique and authentic personality.

The wines of Bergerie de l'Arcade are above all wines for ageing. Their ageing potential is estimated at more than 10 years. The ageing process is careful and lengthy, 24 months of which a good part is spent in oak barrels, which contributes to their density and length on the palate. It is advisable to decant them at least one hour before tasting for younger vintages.

The rarity of the wines from Bergerie de l'Arcade is explained by the modest size of the vineyard and deliberately limited production choices. Production is very limited. The Soulas brothers perpetuate the teachings of Laurent Vaillé of La Grange des Pères, notably his sense of mystery and non-communication, which reinforces the confidential nature of the estate.

History of Bergerie de l'Arcade

Founded by Pascal and Gilles Soulas, Bergerie de l'Arcade is rooted in a long family agricultural tradition. Initially dedicated to fruit tree cultivation, the Soulas family made a bold transition to viticulture in the 2010s, under the influence of Laurent Vaillé, an emblematic figure of Domaine de la Grange des Pères. In 2016, the brothers acquired six hectares of vines on the hillsides of Aniane, previously owned by Gérard Depardieu. Advised by Vaillé, they draw on his expertise to craft exceptional wines. Their legendary discretion, far from the spotlight of social media or trade fairs, has not prevented their reputation from growing rapidly, driven by the remarkable quality of their cuvées and word of mouth among connoisseurs.

Terroirs and Vines of Bergerie de l'Arcade

Located in Pouzols, in the Hérault, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir at the lieu-dit "Les Pradels" in the Brousses, as well as on the hillsides of Aniane. The six hectares of vines, planted with Syrah (45%), Grenache (45%), Mourvèdre (10%) and, from 2021, a touch of Carignan, thrive in a spectacular natural setting, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The soils, typical of the Languedoc, give the grapes a unique aromatic richness, marked by notes of dark fruits, spices and garrigue. Committed to a sustainable farming approach, the Soulas brothers cultivate their vines with care, favouring sustainable practices to preserve biodiversity and the quality of the terroir.

Winemaking at Bergerie de l'Arcade

Winemaking at Bergerie de l'Arcade is a precisely mastered art. The grapes, harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection, are vinified separately by grape variety in order to preserve their unique characteristics. The harvest is destemmed, then the wine is aged for 24 months: 12 months in oak barrels, bringing structure and complexity, followed by 10 months in vats to refine the blend. This rigorous process, inspired by the advice of Laurent Vaillé, produces generous, well-balanced red wines with a silky texture. Each step, from harvest to bottling, reflects the Soulas brothers' commitment to excellence and authenticity.
