Ramos Pinto

Ramos Pinto wines: buy at the best price

Founded in 1880 in Vila Nova de Gaia by Adriano Ramos Pinto, this legendary Douro estate has established itself as one of the absolute references for Port wine and still Portuguese wine. Its singularity lies in a decision made very early on: to vinify only its own grapes, sourced from four quintas acquired over time in the finest sectors of the valley. Quinta do Bom Retiro and Quinta da Urtiga at the heart of the Cima Corgo, Quinta de Ervamoira and Quinta dos Bons Ares in the Douro Superior together account for approximately 350 hectares of vines on schist and granite. Having joined the Louis Roederer group in 1990 while retaining autonomous management, the estate combines cutting-edge viticultural research, increasingly environmentally responsible viticulture, and a style that is recognizable above all others.

History of Ramos Pinto

In 1880, Adriano Ramos Pinto, barely twenty-one years old, founded a Port house on the quays of Vila Nova de Gaia alongside his brother António. A visionary, he focused his efforts on the booming Brazilian market, achieving resounding success with a Port that was slightly better and slightly more expensive than what his customers were used to. By the early 20th century, the house was responsible for nearly half of all Portuguese wine exported to South America.

An art enthusiast and marketing pioneer, Adriano commissioned the leading poster artists of his era—including Leonetto Cappiello, Leopoldo Metlicovitz, and Matteo Angello Rossotti—to create advertising posters that have since become iconic, preserved today in the estate's museum. On the viticultural front, the strategy was equally ambitious: acquiring Quinta do Bom Retiro in 1919, Quinta da Urtiga in 1933, and then Quinta de Ervamoira in 1974 through José António Ramos Pinto Rosas, who sought gentler slopes to enable mechanization in a Douro facing scarce and costly labor. Led by enologist João Nicolau de Almeida, the house also conducted pioneering research on the Douro's native grape varieties, ultimately identifying the region's five most noble grapes. In 1990, Ramos Pinto joined the Champagne house Louis Roederer, sharing its philosophy of integrated production, and launched Duas Quintas that same year—one of the very first great still wines of the Douro. In 1997, the Quinta de Ervamoira museum was established, dedicated to environmental, enological, and archaeological research in the heart of the Côa Valley park.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Ramos Pinto

Quinta do Bom Retiro, whose history dates back to 1750 and whose production was authorized by Queen Maria I in 1789, is located in the Cima Corgo, near Pinhão, bathed by the waters of the Rio Torto. It covers 110 hectares, of which around 62 are planted with vines between 110 and 400 meters in altitude, exclusively with local grape varieties averaging about forty years of age. It serves as the estate's winemaking center and a major experimental area. Neighboring Quinta da Urtiga, acquired in 1933, occupies about fifteen hectares on the left bank of the Douro, in the Torto Valley, featuring vertical plantings and old co-planted vines.

In the Douro Superior, Quinta de Ervamoira extends over 223 hectares, with around 178 in production, between 110 and 340 meters in altitude, in the arid Foz Côa region. Its schist soils, dry and warm climate, and gentler topography make it a model quinta designed for modern viticulture. Quinta dos Bons Ares, on the other hand, stands out radically from the other three: perched around 600 meters in altitude, it rests on granite soils that are unique in the house's portfolio. Its high-altitude freshness brings acidity, tension, and aromatic finesse, invaluable for both white wines and the balance of red wines. This diversity of terroirs, from warm schist at 200 meters to cool granite at 600 meters, represents Ramos Pinto's true signature, alongside its commitment to organic farming practices and enhancing biodiversity across its plots.

Winemaking at Ramos Pinto

The estate oversees every stage of the process, from pruning to bottling. Each grape variety is harvested separately at the precise moment of optimal ripeness, using manual harvesting in small crates and hand sorting for the top cuvées.

For the Ports, the finest musts are foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares, while other batches ferment in modern vats with pump-overs. Fortification with grape spirit occurs at the chosen sugar level, after which the wines travel down to the historic cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia to age in oak and chestnut pipes. This is where the house style is shaped: slow, controlled oxidation for the tawnies—some resting for three decades in cask before blending—or brief reductive aging for the vintages, bottled after eighteen to twenty-four months to continue evolving in bottle. As for the still wines, grapes from Ervamoira are vinified in granite lagares, while those from Bons Ares are fermented in large oak casks and concrete vats with extended macerations, prior to aging in French oak barrels for the reserve cuvées. The white wines, crafted from fully ripe grapes or high-altitude parcels depending on the cuvée, are gently pressed and aged on fine lees to gain texture.

The Cuvées of Ramos Pinto

Ramos Pinto Porto Branco (Adriano White Reserva): a white Port made from Malvasia Fina, Códega, and Rabigato, fermented with pump-overs to enhance skin contact, which gives it a deep golden hue and more complex aromas. Aged for three years in traditional pipes. A remarkable aperitif, served chilled or in cocktails.

Ramos Pinto Porto Ruby (Adriano Ruby Reserva): a blend dominated by Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão, aged for a minimum of four years in wooden pipes before bottling. Deep color, vibrant red and black fruit, and a generous, enticing palate. The most accessible and convivial Port in the range.

Adriano Tawny Reserva: a blended tawny aged for several years in casks, showcasing notes of dried fruit, caramel, and sweet spices, with a lovely freshness on the finish. It pays tribute to the founder and to the Port that established the house's reputation in Brazil.

Ramos Pinto Reserva Collector: an unfiltered Vintage Character style Port, crafted from a blend of several excellent vintages aged for about six years in wood. The grapes come mainly from Quinta da Urtiga in the Cima Corgo, where thirty-year-old co-planted vines bring density and complexity. It pairs wonderfully with dark chocolate.

Ramos Pinto Late Bottled Vintage: produced from a single vintage, it is aged for four to six years in oak casks, compared to just two years for a Vintage. This prolonged contact with wood imparts ripe and fruity flavors, a supple texture, and great accessibility from an early age, without requiring extensive decanting.

Quinta de Ervamoira 10 Year Old Tawny: one of the most iconic tawnies of the Douro, originating from the domaine de la Côa Valley and aged for ten years in casks. Red amber appearance with copper highlights, a nose of walnut, almond, fig, and plum lifted by vanilla and chocolate, and a rich, velvety palate balanced by crisp acidity and a long persistence of acacia honey.

Quinta do Bom Retiro 20 Year Old Tawny: the great classic of the house, consistently celebrated as one of the best 20-year-old tawnies on the market, with ratings reaching up to 98 points from Decanter. Deep amber with golden glints, dried fruit, caramel, cocoa, and spices, with a remarkably long finish and an elegant noble bitterness.

Ramos Pinto 30 Year Old Tawny: a blend of the house's finest plots, foot-trodden in granite lagares, then aged for an average of three decades in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia before several months of resting in the bottle. Remarkable concentration, sublime oxidative patina, and notes of candied fruit, bitter orange, coffee, and fine woods.

Ramos Pinto Vintage: declared exclusively in great years, it is crafted from a selection of the finest wines from the Quintas do Bom Retiro and Ervamoira, featuring approximately 60% Touriga Nacional, 15% Tinta Roriz, 10% Tinta Barroca, and traditional varieties for the remainder. Aged for a minimum of eighteen months in oak or chestnut casks, it is a full-bodied Port, intensely fruity and complex, crafted for decades of cellar aging.

Quinta de Ervamoira Vintage: a single-quinta vintage from the Douro Superior, characterized by Ervamoira's signature structure, fruit intensity, and body. Rockrose, black pepper, and cocoa on the nose, dense substance, and striking tannins, with a persistent freshness running through the wine and leading to a very long finish.

Quinta do Bom Retiro Vintage: the Cima Corgo counterpart, more complex and elegant, featuring a finer texture alongside a floral and spicy profile. It perfectly illustrates the complementary nature of the house's two terroirs.

Duas Quintas Tinto (Douro DOC): launched in 1990, this is one of the region's first great still wines. A blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional sourced from Quintas de Ervamoira and dos Bons Ares, aged for approximately six months—half in oak casks and half in vats. Deep color, exuberant nose of wild berries, blueberry, and mandarin peel, alongside a fresh and vibrant palate with a clean tannic structure.

Duas Quintas Branco (Douro DOC): a Douro white wine crafted primarily from the high-altitude vineyards of Bons Ares. Crisp, floral, and mineral, it emphasizes tension and freshness over power, with notes of citrus and white orchard fruit.

Duas Quintas Reserva Tinto (Douro DOC): the superior version, born from the balance between the warm schists of Ervamoira at 200 meters and the cool granites of Bons Ares at 600 meters. Hand-harvested in small crates, hand-sorted, fermented in granite lagares for Ervamoira, and in wood and concrete with extended macerations for Bons Ares, followed by aging in French oak barrels. Rich, dense, and firmly structured, it combines dark fruits, floral notes, minerality, and genuine aging potential.

Duas Quintas Reserva Branco (Douro DOC): a reserve white wine from the finest plots of Bons Ares, aged partially in wood. Broad texture, saline tension, and aromas of candied citrus, stone fruit, and white flowers, with an aging capacity rarely seen in a Douro white.

Duas Quintas Reserva Especial (Douro DOC): the pinnacle of the still wine range, produced exclusively in exceptional vintages from a strictly limited selection of parcels. Concentration, depth, and refined tannins make it a benchmark aging wine of the Douro.

Bons Ares (Douro DOC): a high-altitude white wine from the house's only granitic terroir at 600 meters. Crisp, aromatic, and remarkably fresh, it illustrates the Douro's ability to produce taut, elegant white wines despite a climate renowned for its heat.

Quinta de Ervamoira (Douro DOC): a single-estate red crafted from the finest parcels of the Douro Superior quinta. Sun-drenched and generous, showcasing ripe dark fruit, garrigue, and spices, it retains a freshness and elegance through meticulous aging that defines the house style.
