The gathering primarily reserved for professionals "Les Grands Jours de Bourgogne" closed its doors on March 22, 2014, recording an attendance announced as "sharply higher" by the organizers. During this event, 2012 was at the center of all discussions. An opportunity for us to revisit this particular vintage from the Burgundy region.
2012 is generating much discussion, as the exceptional quality of the red wines surprises professionals. The white wines also appear excellent, but to a lesser extent. For the reds, some do not hesitate to speak of the finest Pinot Noir vintage in Burgundy in the past 15 years (even after 2005). Although that year was challenging for winemakers, with a cold snap in early February, above-average rainfall from April to July, diseases like mildew, violent and destructive hailstorms (particularly in the Volnay appellation), and a month and a half of drought before harvest, the low yields nonetheless produce wines of exceptional quality.
However, the scarcity of red wines from the 2012 vintage is creating tensions (already apparent) and may pose problems. Winemakers and merchants have significantly increased their prices to offset the loss of yield, which does not help the situation, both in France and for export.
An exceptional and rare vintage that will be the talk of many...
