Merlot forms the backbone of Clos Fourtet's wines, representing the vast majority of the estate's plantings. It is complemented by Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon. This dominance of Merlot on limestone soils gives the estate's wines their characteristic aromatic signature: a velvety texture, silky tannins, and a fruity depth that expresses itself fully with a few years of ageing.
