Domaine de Montcalmès was founded in 1998 by Frédéric Pourtalié and his father Jean-Marie, who decided to leave cooperative winemaking to create their own cellar and produce higher-quality wines. The name of the estate comes from Occitan and literally means "limestone hill". Frédéric Pourtalié honed his expertise alongside great references of the Languedoc before giving his own identity to this family estate, now recognized as one of the most essential addresses in the region.
