Nestled at the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, in Trets, just a stone's throw from Aix-en-Provence, Mas de Cadenet is one of the most distinguished estates in Provence. Owned by the Négrel family since 1813 — seven generations of winegrowers — it spans around sixty hectares classified under AOP Côtes de Provence and Cru Sainte-Victoire, cultivated using organic farming methods. On this terroir of calcareous pebbles bathed in sunlight, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Rolle yield precise, gastronomic wines that have been acclaimed by critics.
The history of Mas de Cadenet begins in 1813, when Jean-Jacques Négrel and his brothers acquired this property at the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain. The very name of the estate is a statement in itself: Mas de Cadenet means in Provençal an estate planted with cade, a shrub of the juniper family that still colours the vineyard paths. From then on, the Négrel family devoted themselves to the vine and passed down their know-how from generation to generation, becoming one of the oldest winemaking families in Provence.
Seven generations have thus succeeded one another on these lands. A pioneer, Guy Négrel contributed to gaining recognition for the Sainte-Victoire appellation as one of the finest terroirs in Provence, going so far as to produce the first rosé of the appellation vinified in oak barrels. Today, he runs the estate supported by his children Maud and Matthieu, the seventh generation, who have committed the entire vineyard to organic farming for more than a decade. For the family, this sustainable approach is the most fitting way to protect the inherited legacy and to convey the personality of this enchanting site.
The Mas de Cadenet vineyard stretches in a single block across a south-facing plateau, at around 250 metres altitude, on the foothills of the Sainte-Victoire mountain so dear to Cézanne. The sixty or so hectares of vines are complemented by some twenty hectares of cereals and woodland that preserve the biodiversity of the site. The soils, rich in calcareous gravel and clayey sandstone formed at the end of the Secondary Era (fossilised dinosaur eggs have even been found here), give the wines a beautiful minerality and remarkable freshness.
The grape varieties are based on Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Rolle and Cabernet Sauvignon. Production gives pride of place to rosé (around 60 to 70%), complemented by reds and whites. With a naturally low yield of around 45 hectolitres per hectare, and a high average vine age (the oldest reaching seventy years), the estate produces several cuvées according to soil type, vine age and their potential, in order to render as faithfully as possible the singularities of each terroir.
At Mas de Cadenet, excellence is the cornerstone of crafting gastronomic wines. The approach begins well upstream, with rigorous plot-by-plot selection that assigns each cuvée a precise and defined style. The rosés, delicate and mineral, are vinified with care to preserve their freshness and finesse, the signature of the Sainte-Victoire appellation.
The most ambitious cuvées make use of oak barrel ageing, such as the Mas Négrel Cadenet rosé and red, sourced from the oldest vines and conceived as true age-worthy wines. This complex winemaking, combined with the concentration of old-vine grapes, yields deep and structured wines, capable of ageing several years in the cellar. The organic management of the vineyard completes this pursuit, expressing the minerality and nuances of the terroir as faithfully as possible.
Mas de Cadenet Rosé: the estate's signature cuvée in AOP Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire, sourced from vines fifteen to thirty years old. Fruity, delicate and mineral, highly awarded, it is an elegant gastronomic rosé that beautifully expresses the freshness of this high-altitude terroir.
Mas de Cadenet Rouge: a blend dominated by Grenache and Syrah grown on calcareous gravel. Harmonious and structured, with notes of dark fruits and spices, it offers a fine concentration tempered by the characteristic freshness of the Sainte-Victoire.
Mas de Cadenet Blanc: a 100% Rolle white wine, with a pale robe and green highlights, original and harmonious. With a nose of ripe fruits and flowers, it unfolds a fresh and mineral palate, a faithful expression of traditional Provence.
Mas Négrel Cadenet Rosé: the prestige rosé cuvée, the estate's first rosé vinified and aged in oak barrels, sourced from the oldest vines. Full-bodied and complex, it is a gastronomic, age-worthy rosé with a rich texture and a persistent finish.
Mas Négrel Cadenet Rouge: the estate's flagship red wine, a great gastronomic cru sourced from selected old vines and crafted through complex winemaking with barrel ageing. Dense, deep and built for ageing, it reveals the full nobility of Syrah and Grenache on this terroir.
Mas Négrel Cadenet Blanc: a great prestige white wine, 100% Rolle sourced from the finest plots, vinified and aged in barrel. Rich, complex and mineral, it combines depth and freshness for a gastronomic white with fine ageing potential.
Arbaude: the estate's everyday pleasure cuvée, in AOP Côtes de Provence, which takes its name from the largest plot of Mas de Cadenet. Conceived as a fresh and accessible everyday wine, it embodies the convivial spirit of the Négrel house.
Vin Cuit: a rare Provençal speciality, this traditional sweet wine is crafted according to ancestral know-how from concentrated must. Rich and candied, it is an ideal accompaniment to desserts and perpetuates a regional tradition dear to the family.
