History of Dominus Estate

The history of Dominus is intertwined with that of Napa Valley itself. As early as 1838, George Yount — pioneer of the valley and founder of the town of Yountville — planted the first vines on the Napanook site. In the 1940s and 1950s, this vineyard already supplied the raw material for some of the finest California wines.

In 1981, the legendary Robert Mondavi introduced Christian Moueix to the owners of Napanook, Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, daughters of John Daniel Jr. Captivated by this exceptional terroir, the Bordeaux native partnered with them and produced the first vintage of Dominus in 1983, before becoming the sole owner in 1994. The name chosen, "Dominus" — "master of the estate" in Latin — reflects his deep and enduring commitment to this land.

Heir to the Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix house, at the helm of the mythical châteaux of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion (Trotanoy, La Fleur-Pétrus, Bélair-Monange…), Christian Moueix has since led a true double life on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1997, he endowed the estate with a spectacular winery designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, which has become an icon of viticultural architecture. Today, drawing on accumulated experience and surrounded by a team led by winemaker Tod Mostero, Dominus continues its quest for a "perfect" wine, faithful to its terroir.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Dominus Estate

The Napanook vineyard stretches at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, in a natural amphitheater within the Yountville appellation. Shaped over the centuries by water flowing down from the hillsides, it rests on an alluvial fan of gravelly, deep and perfectly drained soils that compel the vine to draw its resources from deep below. This singular terroir, combined with a temperate climate and the refreshing influence of valley air currents, yields grapes of great purity.

The estate is entirely farmed dry (dry-farming), with no irrigation whatsoever: a demanding choice, rare in California, which reinforces the character of the fruit and the aging potential of the wines. Long committed to respectful viticulture, Dominus Estate obtained CCOF organic farming certification in 2021. The grape varieties, true to the Bordeaux inspiration, are led by cabernet sauvignon, complemented by cabernet franc and petit verdot.

Winemaking at Dominus Estate

At Napanook, winemaking extends the spirit of Bordeaux's finest growths: minimal intervention and absolute respect for the grape. Work in the vineyard is extremely meticulous — yield control, leaf removal, green harvesting and rigorous sorting — so as to harvest only grapes at perfect ripeness.

In the cellar, the goal is to let the terroir express itself. The grapes, selected plot by plot, are vinified with precision and then aged in French oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new casks that accompanies the wine without ever masking it. This patient aging builds a silky, perfectly integrated structure. The house style is immediately recognizable: powerful yet never showy wines, combining concentration, freshness and an elegance that brings them close, it is said, to the greatest Pomerols.

The cuvées of Dominus Estate

The Napanook vineyard gives rise to three complementary wines, which express the same signature of precision and purity at different levels.

Dominus — Napa Valley (Yountville)

The estate's fine wine and one of the most sought-after Cabernets in the world. Largely dominated by cabernet sauvignon (up to around 90% of the blend depending on the vintage) and complemented by cabernet franc and petit verdot, Dominus captivates with its deep color and generous bouquet: black fruits (cassis, plum, black cherry), tobacco, cedar and mineral and earthy nuances. The palate, structured and refined, unfolds firm tannins and an endless finish. With time, the wine gains in complexity — leather, spices, chocolate — and reveals an aging potential of several decades. A collector's wine, regularly acclaimed by international critics.

Napanook — Napa Valley

Sourced from the same historic vineyard, Napanook is the estate's "second wine." More supple and more approachable in its youth, it retains the structure and the nobility of fruit of its elder: notes of black cherry, plum and tobacco, an elegant palate with already silky tannins and a lingering finish. Othello — Napa Valley

Othello is the most immediate and most generous cuvée of the estate.
