Jo Landron is one of the most iconic and respected figures in the Nantes wine region. A pioneer of biodynamic farming in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation, he has been running Domaines Landron since 1990, an estate of nearly 50 hectares spread across the Domaine de la Louvetrie, the Château de la Carizière, and the Grands Houx, in La Haye-Fouassière. Planted 95% with Melon de Bourgogne, his vineyards rest on an exceptional mosaic of subsoils — amphibolite, sandstone over clay, orthogneiss and quartz — which impart a rare minerality and depth to his cuvées. Certified organic since 2002 and biodynamic since 2011, Jo Landron produces around 260,000 bottles per year, half of which are exported, making Domaines Landron a world reference for terroir-driven Muscadet. His daughter Hélène has joined the estate to carry on this wonderful family adventure.
The history of Domaines Landron begins in 1945, when Pierre Landron and his brother Julien acquired 3 hectares of land in La Haye-Fouassière, in the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation, which had been abandoned during the war years. They cleared, planted and progressively developed the family estate. In 1967, the two brothers parted ways and Pierre continued alone. It was in 1979 that his son Joseph, known as Jo, a graduate of the École d'Agriculture de Briacé, joined the estate and began purchasing new plots. In 1990, Jo officially took the reins of the estate and stamped his vision: that of a terroir-driven Muscadet, mineral, pure and expressive.
The decisive turning point came as early as 1987: a chemical herbicide nearly poisoned the vines, prompting an immediate awakening. Jo banned these products and began tilling the soils. During the 1990s, he eliminated synthetic pesticides entirely and defined his single-vineyard ranges in 1993: Amphibolite, Les Houx and Le Fief du Breil. In 1999, he embarked on formal organic conversion, obtained Ecocert certification in 2002, then turned to biodynamics in 2005 under the guidance of Pierre Masson, with Biodyvin certification achieved in 2011. Hélène Landron has joined her father to take over, perpetuating the family philosophy of rigour and respect for living things.
The richness and originality of Domaines Landron lie in the exceptional diversity of their geological subsoils, which form three distinct major terroirs. The first, on amphibolite, is composed of particularly mineral green metamorphic rocks, which give the wines their lively and iodine-tinged character. The second, on argilo-sandy soils, is located at Les Grands Houx and lends the wines greater roundness and a remarkable ageing potential. The third, at Château de la Carizière and at Le Fief du Breil, rests on orthogneiss and quartz: a metamorphic rock derived from granite, poor and eroded, which drives the vines to seek their minerality deep underground.
The vineyard, situated on hillside slopes overlooking the Sèvre Nantaise, benefits from a temperate microclimate with good natural ventilation that limits disease pressure. Harvests are exclusively manual, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard. Yields are deliberately limited, never exceeding 42 hl/ha, with green harvesting in years when necessary. Melon de Bourgogne accounts for 95% of the vine varieties, complemented by a few plots of Folle Blanche.
Jo Landron's winemaking philosophy in the cellar is clear and consistent: to reveal the mineral identity of each terroir through low-interventionist vinification. Whole bunches are pressed directly and slowly. Alcoholic fermentations are conducted solely with indigenous yeasts, in cement tanks or oak barrels depending on the cuvée. Malolactic fermentation is generally avoided for the main cuvées, in order to preserve the freshness and natural tension of Melon de Bourgogne. For the Melonix cuvée, malolactic fermentation is, on the contrary, permitted, conferring a different roundness and accessibility to the wine.
Lees ageing is at the heart of the Landron style: from 11 to 12 months for the entry-level cuvées, up to 24 to 30 months for the single-vineyard ageing cuvées such as Le Fief du Breil. These extended ageing periods bring complexity, volume and a characteristic texture, while preserving freshness and minerality. The carbon dioxide naturally produced during fermentation is retained, giving the wines that slightly sparkling character so typical of Muscadet sur lie. Bottlings are carried out without fining or filtration for the most terroir-driven cuvées.
La Louvetrie (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): The entry-level cuvée and first expression of the estate, La Louvetrie is drawn from several plots of Domaines Landron, aged 14 months on lees. It offers beautiful roundness and suppleness, with aromas of lemon, fresh white fruits and a subtle minerality on the finish. An accessible, fresh and versatile Muscadet, ideal with grilled sea bass, sashimi or a seafood platter, to be served between 8 and 10°C.
Amphibolite (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): Cuvée from plots resting on amphibolite, the green metamorphic rock characteristic of the Nantes region. A blend of several young vines on diverse soils, this cuvée expresses the liveliness and crystalline minerality of the amphibolitic terroir. Aromas of brilliant citrus, wet rock and iodine notes, precise and saline palate. A Muscadet of great purity, the ideal companion for oysters and shellfish.
Amphibolite Nature (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): The natural version of the Amphibolite cuvée, vinified without added sulphur, without fining or filtration. It expresses with even greater directness and vivacity the minerality of the amphibolitic terroirs. Intense and expressive nose, taut and saline palate, for lovers of natural wines and Muscadet in its purest expression.
Les Houx (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): Single-vineyard cuvée from Les Grands Houx, vines planted on sandstone over clay soils. Aged on lees for a longer period, it develops over time notes of exotic fruits, light honey and almond, while retaining a beautiful mineral tension. Very interesting ageing potential, this wine acquires a patina and gains in complexity over the years. A gastronomic Muscadet.
Le Clos la Carizière (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): Single-vineyard cuvée from a 4-hectare plot at Château de la Carizière, planted between 1944 and 1975 on orthogneiss and quartz soils. Low yield of approximately 38 hl/ha. Elegant nose of juicy pear, lemon zest and chalky minerality, silky attack, generous palate and a long, taut finish. A refined wine, perfect with seafood, shellfish or grilled fish.
Le Fief du Breil (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): Prestige cuvée and the pinnacle of the range, from a 6-hectare hillside plot overlooking the Sèvre Nantaise, with a full south-facing exposure, on poor, very stony argilo-siliceous soil with a strong presence of quartz over orthogneiss bedrock. Forty-year-old vines, yields limited to 40 hl/ha, manual harvest with rigorous sorting. Fermentation in cement tanks with indigenous yeasts, no malolactic, lees ageing of 24 to 30 months with bâtonnage, in oak barrels with no new wood. The wine is smoky and iodine-tinged, with a lively attack that opens onto aromas of lemon, candied citrus, almond, stone and truffle. An exceptional ageing wine, ideally enjoyed after 5 to 10 years in the cellar, or even longer. Coup de coeur from La Revue du Vin de France.
Haute Tradition (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): Cuvée from a rigorous selection of the estate's finest plots, aged for approximately 11 months on lees. It embodies the tradition of Muscadet in its most carefully crafted and most typical expression: fresh aromas of lemon, white flowers and stone, a straight and mineral palate, a persistent finish. A wine representative of Jo Landron's style and convictions, recommended by Gilbert et Gaillard.
Melonix (Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie): The estate's rebellious and original cuvée, which Jo Landron himself nicknames "the rebel of the estate". From vines of approximately 40 years old on sandy-clay soils, Melonix is vinified with indigenous yeasts, without sulphur, and malolactic fermentation is here permitted, unlike the other cuvées. Aged 12 months on lees, bottled without fining or filtration. Very expressive and floral nose, with elegant minerality, a rich and silky palate, with notes of clementine, white grape and a fleshy texture. A pleasure-driven Muscadet, open and accessible, to pair with rillettes, charcuterie or grilled sole.
Atmosphères (Traditional Method Extra Brut): A sparkling cuvée crafted using the traditional method from Melon de Bourgogne. Fine and persistent bubbles, nose of citrus and brioche, a fresh and taut palate with beautiful minerality. A characterful sparkling wine, true to the identity of the Nantes terroirs, to be served as an aperitif or with seafood starters.
