Piero Busso is a benchmark family wine estate in the Barbaresco appellation, nestled in Neive, at the heart of Piedmont. Across some ten hectares farmed organically, the Busso family cultivates nebbiolo across four Barbaresco crus, in Neive and Treiso, as well as barbera and white grape varieties such as sauvignon and chardonnay. True to a traditional, low-interventionist winemaking approach, the wines of Piero Busso captivate with the elegance, finesse and delicate fruitiness of the nebbiolo from the Neive hills.
The Piero Busso estate was founded in 1948, when Guido Busso planted his first vines in the commune of Neive, starting from the Albesani vineyard. Following Guido's premature passing, it was his son Piero who, in the late 1970s, took over the reins of the cellar with his wife Lucia. In 1982, they produced the first bottle of Barbaresco Albesani, a founding act that defined the estate's ethos — a wine respectful of the terroir, the variety and the fruit.
Over the years, the estate has grown through the acquisition of new crus — Mondino in the Balluri sector in 1985, Gallina in Neive in 1999, and then San Stunet in Treiso in 2000. In 2010, in memory of grandfather Guido, the Albesani Viti Vecchie cuvée was born, sourced solely from vines planted in the 1950s. Today, it is Piero and Lucia's children, Pierguido and Emanuela, who carry on this family expertise.
The vineyard extends over approximately eight and a half to ten hectares, spread across four Barbaresco crus. In Neive, the Albesani cru — which surrounds the cellar and is home to the estate's oldest vines — Gallina and Mondino, located in the Balluri sector, rest on Sant'Agata marls, alternating limestone, clay and silt. In Treiso, the San Stunet cru constitutes the estate's only plot outside Neive and brings finesse and complementarity to the range.
The vines, planted on well-exposed hillsides between two hundred and two hundred and forty metres in altitude, benefit from ideal natural drainage for nebbiolo. The estate is certified organic, but goes beyond certification — no herbicides or chemical products, with ground cover left to grow freely and an approach respectful of soil life, well before such environmental awareness became widespread.
In the cellar, the Busso family favours a traditional and minimally interventionist approach, extending in the winery the respectful work carried out in the vineyard. Fermentations begin with indigenous yeasts, followed by long skin macerations of up to forty-five days, or even sixty days with a submerged cap for the old-vine cuvées.
Ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak foudres, typically of twenty-five hectolitres, which preserve the vibrant fruit and natural elegance of the nebbiolo from Neive. The Viti Vecchie cuvées, the rarest and most profound, age in smaller foudres for approximately three years. The wines then rest for several months in bottle before release, in keeping with the slow pace dictated by tradition.
Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese: a historic cuvée and the heart of the estate, sourced from the Albesani cru that surrounds the cellar, on calcareous and silty-clay soils. Garnet colour, an ample and balanced bouquet, this nebbiolo combines depth, silky tannins and great elegance.
Barbaresco Albesani Viti Vecchie Riserva: the estate's deepest and rarest wine, produced only in the finest years from the oldest vines at Albesani, planted in the 1950s. An exceptionally long maceration and extended ageing bestow upon it a kaleidoscopic aromatic profile, blending dried rose, balsamic herbs and white truffle.
Barbaresco Gallina: sourced from the Gallina cru in Neive, on Sant'Agata marls, this Barbaresco stands out for its darker fruit and complexity, with a fine structure and great ageing potential.
Barbaresco Gallina Viti Vecchie: a selection of old vines from the Gallina cru, even more concentrated and profound — a refined and accomplished expression of this exceptional terroir.
Barbaresco Mondino: sourced from the Mondino cru in the Balluri sector of Neive, this supple and airy Barbaresco marries complex red fruit with delicate spiced notes, accessible earlier in its youth.
Barbaresco San Stunet: a unique cuvée from Treiso, finely chiselled, revealing a nebbiolo of great finesse and subtlety — an ideal complement to the range.
Langhe Nebbiolo: far from being a secondary wine, it is sourced from a selection of young vines from the Neive plots. Harmonious and balanced from its youth, with notes of rose, cherry and spices, it offers the immediate pleasure of nebbiolo.
Barbera d'Alba Majano: barbera sourced from the Majano vineyard on calcareous clay soils, full and vinous, with vibrant fruit and discreet oak influence — a vivid expression of this Piedmontese variety.
Barbera d'Alba Vigna San Stefanetto: a barbera from a high-altitude vineyard, more intense, structured and complex, built for ageing while already seductive in its youth.
Langhe Sauvignon Arbe': a fresh and aromatic white wine sourced from sauvignon, bringing an original touch to the estate's range.
Langhe Chardonnay: a white wine crafted from chardonnay, elegant and balanced, completing the range of whites from this Piedmontese estate.
